  1. Music theory is definitely enlightening, yet provisional just like any other human system of knowledge. It's immature to ignore it. Only the naive reject it as authoritative. This is because they don't understand "it" well enough to know that "it" is merely descriptive. What is right is to take it on so you have some way of modeling aural phenomenon in terms of a larger temporal framework. For instance you hit a note that sounds "bad"; now instead of having a bias against that note you now know why it is sounding that way relative to other notes. It gets you out of a limited space and allows you to see relationships of pitch and rhythm in terms of broader meaning and schema which is fluctuating in time. In other words it helps you move from a static comprehension of sound to a relativistic one. You gotta' know the rules to break the rules.

    Yeah, that.

  2. Are you guys familiar with ZUN? He's a guy who's done a series of shooting games called Touhou Project that's a huge phenomenon in Japan, comparable to Harry Potter or Star Wars. The coolest part is that he's an amazing composer, and there are hundreds of groups who cover his music in pretty much every genre you can think of. The electronic stuff tends to be very dance-oriented and a lot of it is dumb house or trance, but some of it is really good.

Yes! I've actually got a "U.N. Owen Was Her?" remix that's been collecting dust for a while.

  3. I've posted this before, but, what the heck, this need to be posted again:

Artitsts include: Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Prefuse 73, Mu-Ziq, Freeform, Matmos, Isan, Autechre, Japanese Telecom, Amon Tobin, Plaid, Manitoba, Luke Vibert, Mum, Clue to Kalo, Boom Bip, Kim Hiorthoy, Pole, Mira Calix ... rescoring was done in 2003 by http://everyone.doesntexist.com the tasteful and tasteless abstract; focusing on experimental forms of music. visit the site to get the playlist for this video and take a listen to the stream to hear more. why was this done?: for fun; but the orginal soundtrack is great as well."

Also, badass. I love this movie. I'm gonna check this out.

  4. Absolutely brilliant machine. After a year of having it I bought the Monomachine. It's the best pairing in terms of gear I think I've ever come across. Can't wait for whatever Elektron have up their sleeve next.

everybody check out a few Futureimage albums at juno.com, some of the finest music i have ever heard using monomachines and machinedrums

Damn. No joke. You've got some sick stuff, futureimage.

This thread makes me wish I had money.

  5. In addition to my work on Eufloria I've done scoring work for the Discovery Channel and I've licensed out a bunch of my published works for use in various short films, web shows, and so on. The next "bigger" one is an independent film that will premiere at next year's Mutek festival which uses the track "Luke's Rusty Drum" from my 2007 album New Drugs For Nuclear Families Of The Seventies.

Nice! I'm really impressed. Perhaps you could PM me a little about how you managed to get into that kind of work? Making music for games and documentaries is my dream.

Someone in another VGM thread posted these, I had completely forgotten about them (and I beat the game) - had no idea I was listening to a DnB soundtrack back then!

That was probably me. Ape Escape is my favorite game. This song is actually my ringer for my cell phone right now.

  7. wahrk, where do you get a tapestry like that and for how much?

I got mine at Oat Willie's here in Austin (the south location to be specific) for something like $15-$20. It was actually made in India. Oat Willie's is a local Austin head shop chain.

  8. lol @ attempt at sound baffling.

Yeah, it's a crappy poor man's attempt. There are some larger, more dense ones behind the tapestry and also behind the tapestry on the opposite wall. They help a little, and every little bit counts in this shitty apartment.

    love the samadhi(?) blanket.

Ha ha, thanks. It was the coolest design I could find after looking around. Oms are nifty.

  9. Oh hey, I guess I haven't posted mine. Here's my current setup:

    Renoise

    3Ghz quad-core, 64-bit, 4GB RAM, custom built computer

    PreSonus Firebox interface

M-Audio DX4 monitors (soon to be upgraded, hopefully)

    Grado SR-60 headphones

    Akai APC40

Novation ReMote 49SL Compact MIDI keyboard

M-Audio Trigger Finger drum pad controller

Also in this photo are FL Studio, which I ended up using in conjunction with Renoise on this particular song (a rare occasion), my microKORG, which I don't use very much, and my sub, which I can't use in my new apartment.

Not pictured is my Fender American Select Stratocaster.

This is not the best example of the recent stuff made here, but it's the only one that's not on lockdown due to being part of an unreleased album. It's made entirely from one sample of a skylark singing. You best have a good sub.
