1. Who remembers this vid I found that so ace back in the day
2. Ohh, I have those, no idea it was the same guy. Thanks for the list ^^
3. Pretty nice so far. Lot of stuff on that bandcamp, if anyone has some other recommendations I'm all ears.
4. Oh wow there's a whole series of live albums there. And a good reminder to blast some Can again.
5. But everyone's leaving facebook and reddit is going down the drain. If watmm just sticks around long enough... Yeah, I've noticed groups of people migrating from various public places to discord servers.. But on the other hand there's some newer forums (lines comes to mind) that seem to have no trouble at all attracting an active membership.
6. I don't know if it makes sense to consider it in such an adversarial way. I'd think most people would probably be happy to pay voluntarily if it's easy enough and they've gotten some joy out of watmm in the preceding year, just like most people are happy to pay for netflix/spotify etc.. these days even though you can still pirate.
7. In Holland we have our own system for internet payments called IDeal, very rarely I borrow someone's credit card or just do a bank transfer manually if supported. And yeah I can also top up paypal via IDeal (but don't really like to do it, I still have this feeling that paypal is super shady back from when there were stories about them just draining peoples bank accounts with no recourse etc..). I'm not saying it's not possible (or even all that difficult these days), just that it's a bigger hurdle than 16yo-me would probably take for lurking an internet forum. By the way, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but what's your opinion on having a 1 year free trial period for new accounts?
8. I want to mention that completely separate from any consideration of how much it costs there is considerable friction in having to pay, and perhaps more so for some countries. Here in the Netherlands we don't use credit cards much, never had one, also never really used paypal. I have no problem paying 3 euros per year for some weird internet forum but, especially back when I signed up and was younger, sure as hell I was not going to ask my parents to borrow their credit card or link my bank account to paypal.
9. Since 2013 apparently. Damn I'm old lol.
10. It costs money to sign up a new account now.
11. Sounds cool. Randomly had John Fahey's Hitomi on heavy rotation after stumbling on it in my collection and not knowing anything about it/him.
12. Wow yes:
STEIM (STudio for Electro Instrumental Music) was a center for research and development of new musical instruments in the electronic performing arts, located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Beginning in the 1970's, STEIM became known as a pioneering center for electronic music, where the specific context of electronic music was always strongly related to the physical and direct actions of a musician. In this tradition, STEIM supported artists in residence such as composers and performers, but also multimedia and video artists, helping them to develop setups which allowed for bespoke improvisation and performance with individually designed technology. In 2020 STEIM seized to exist due to lack of funding.
Wish I'd heard of this sooner...
13. lmfao dostrotime-2 confirmed
14. Thanks for the heads up, loved his stuff on Clear Records back in my "indiscriminately check out everything on Clear Records" phase.
15. woww amazing thanks for the headsup for those of us who don't track the mastodon etc...
16. I remember him from the mnml ssgs days, gonna have a listen.
17. Figured it might interest a few here. "The Omnichord will be re-produced to commemorate the 70th anniversary of our company." " Anyone here have or ever used one?
18. Nice, love how smooth the bass and kick sit together.
19. Looks interesting for sure, especially since it can do polyphonic melodic playback. But the punch-in effects seem to be one of the main selling points and I don't really care for those. Not sure if the Sonicware Smpltrek wouldn't be nicer for me. Lots of nice samplers coming out suddenly, I remember not too long ago a Korg Microsampler was basically the only option if you wanted melodic sampling (in hardware)..
20. Ohh neat, thanks. I had no idea about these Mayan flutes.
21. Does anyone know exactly what kind of flute(s) he uses?
22. Once again very pretty. Great tune as well. Got that cheerful yet melancholy IDM spirit.
