Well, programming tracks on Elektron boxes isn't exactly "playing" music, now, is it? I mean, it's programming a computer to fire off a series of events, with pre-determined parameters, special parameter locks, logic conditions, automation, etc. There's a performance aspect of 'mangling' sounds on the fly (turning knobs, muting trigs, "control-ALL", etc.), live... but, for the most part, the music is programmed--it's not played, directly. There's not a whole lot of difference between that, and working with software. Weren't Quaristice and Untilted made with Elektron machines? "Jamming" on Elektron boxes? yeah, right.
edit: btw, these new jams are fucking gorgeous, for the most part.

I have seen the tr-8 and it's a really physically huge thing which I don't think needs to be in this day and age. Since I have been looking for inspiration in building my own DIY drum machine/sequencer thing on top of the Livid Code I have been looking at a lot of videos. I caught a glimpse of the tr-08 and tr-09 in a couple of videos and these seem like really nice devices in terms of usability. If they only had some SD card reader so you could load your own samples it would be golden though.
I believe there's still a healthy market for a larger, more 'breathable' UI / layout... some people are tired of the tiny objects trend. Honestly, after watching a video of Cuckoo showcasing an unfinished OP-Z, it looks painfully small.. of course, that doesn't detract from the tremendous functionality of the thing, it just doesn't look very playable--it looks fiddly as f*ck.

I can't lie, parameter-locking and some of the other automation features make it feel like working in Logic, or Audacity et al.. I suppose that's what makes Elektron boxes so cool? They're not very instant - a whole lot of preparation is involved. A:B logic is a fun, if math-heavy exercise when thinking about sounds and their duration.

The Digitakt doesn't work like a true bypass mixer.. if you're sequencing a synth, the only way to process its signal with the Digitakt is by the sampling / monitoring function. You'll need a mixer with Aux send(s) to process (sample) the synthesizer, while simultaneously playing it (out to monitors / speakers etc.) - or multiple outputs on the synth.
Using single-cycle waveforms, along with samples, the Digitakt can function as a limited synthesizer.

Yamaha Reface DX would be cool at $300... I just don't like the feel of the Korg membrane / keypad--feels chintzy. It looks like there were some pre- Dec. 31st deals at Juno - Yamaha Reface keyboards for approx. $275 USD. The CP (sold out) sounds pretty sweet, but it's more of a want than a need. They look well-built, very playable

I think they've succeeded in making a better show than Breaking Bad, with everything they've learned so far. I couldn't give a shit about fan service "easter egg" bullshit.. the characters are great, plot is interesting, the atmosphere is palpable, and the way they've been executing the exposition has been masterful. Thinking back about Breaking Bad, there's so much nerve-wracking, even grating action, BCS is delightful in comparison.
I'm curious to see who meets Gus first, Mike or Jimmy. money is on Mike, then how does Jimmy become involved? Going back to another 80s cartel flashback ala BB would be sweet.
The rumour is that some "dark" shit is going to go down this season.. it'll be interesting, at least.

edit: did I say anything can happen? Well one thing they don't show is women guests doing cool shit. It's totally a fantasy world for guys. My girlfriend for example really dislikes that, and it's understandable imo.
there was the one woman w/rifle (Bojana Novakovic?), she was hanging out w/Teddy spaghetti. She gunned down that surly/belligerent baldman in town, and then went on Teddy's quest for Wyatt. Then she? tripped a booby trap/wire and they were swarmed by Wyatt's (?) acolytes at night. Teddy got mauled, but she managed to escape? there's a loose end...
it looked like she was having a good time.

not sure why people are craving so much more exposition.. the gradual unfolding and progression of the plot seems straightforward and not overly cumbersome (or too vague) in its complexity

yeah, it's definitely one of the more ambient/pleasant parts of the album. i hesitate to call it ambient cuz other parts of the album are quite jarring/lively. that soundcloud excerpt is the track that closes the album, it's not characteristic of the entire thing
this is the first track on Hidden Tapes... both albums were recorded around the same time, and they share similar elements. I was afraid that Un salon... might be a sort of leftovers album, but it's a great series of tracks. i get a strong emotional vibe from it

Marc Baron's recent release on Potlatch, Un salon au fond d'un lac, is super playable.. primarily made of tape music/tape machine sounds, it's nicely varied with a consistent melancholy vibe throughout. Both this album and Hidden Tapes are among the best noise/sound art albums I've heard over the last couple years. FYI, it's not super abrasive or "power" noise, or whatever.

third ep didn't have my favorite Radiohead song on a piano roll - show is falling apart. (it's as engaging as ever). Teddy is more interesting now, new guest is way into it. Will.i.am's feeling it. Ford has a nice office

it's a ridiculous waste of material (that packaging), seems a reasonable move to simplify it.
I keep the disc in a cd-r tray, to avoid having to open that bullshit over and over.

the first part of Fleure is great, i wish there was more material on the album that sounded like it. it doesn't remind me of other ae tracks, it doesn't sound standard or "stock"--what the problem is?
