I am kind of in the same boat honestly. Donuts never really clicked with me, it's almost too refined/polished. I think Dilla was at his best when he was more loose and raw. Like I absolutely love his unreleased beats/outtakes (Beats Batch series, etc.). Same reason I love the Wagon Christ Studio Sessions too

Yeah Donuts is ok, but I agree w you re: Dilla and his looser stuff, proba why I prefer Madlib.   Also Studio sessions should be mastered and released, love it.

Today I found out that Luke Vibert remembered J Dilla in Rhythm:

    Secondary, 6 of 7

Luke mentioned to me he does not like the album "Donuts" however, which i found odd.

Luke gives Jay Dee a shot out at the end of this video

I was present when this photo was taken.  Luke was signing copies of Recipticon for the owner of Gramophone Records in chicago.  Each copy he signed said "Ahoy!" lol

I just got a hold of a FLAC rip of this and it was played at 45rpm. 33 is the correct speed, right?

45 rpm is the correct speed. I asked Luke in October, he replied "fast, 45."

Out of the 3 shows I've been to (elsewhere, good room, and this good room) this was by far his best set. Dropped tuss fredugolon 6, my red hot car, dscape unreleased remix, digideroo, old Plug, and a bunch more. Only played for an hour and currently waiting for my ride home. Thanks Luke.

What's Dscape remix?   Any footage from the show?

Coincidentally on the island for vacation and just saw that he's playing Brooklyn. Gonna be great to see him again after 4 years when he played Good Room back in 2018. Now my vacation got a whole lot better!

I was at the show too, don't think I'll make it this time though.

  7. Great post and very informative/fascinating.  I had seen her journal entries re- the Aphex show but had no idea how much other work she'd done.
I wonder who the dj was at the February show- Luke Vibert did a stint around that time spinning before Aphex i wonder if she's making reference to him.

Absolutely - I adore the Studio Sessions tracks. I love when he goes full spaced out hazy stoner mode. It'll always bug me that he says those are the tracks that the labels never want to release, because to me that's what he is unparalleled at.

I completely agree. The studio sessions are so f'n good, some of my fav stuff he's done.  He plays some of the studio tracks in this set among some other unreleased goodies:

  9. Luke has so many tracks that have been played out and never seen a proper release.  What are some of your favs that you'd like to see on a proper release?
    I'll start:

There's Not Enough Space in This Track - played on Kiss FM Tally Ho! promo this was inexplicably left off the final cut.  One of my fav tracks of Vibert, i'd give my left nut to get a proper mix of this. The only version that exists is from the real media audio recording.

Mellotronic- also from 1998 played on Luke's first Peel session, a halfway decent mp3 of this stellar track exists

im very curious about NCC 1701, the first rephlex release according to the rephlex manifesto:

    Rephlex Discography - 1991/92

    • NCC 1701 IG-88/Voafose and Ohm Double A side 4 track 12"
    • CAT 002 Q:Chastic 4 track double 7"
    • CAT 003 Strong Island Players 1 sided promo

ive always thought that ohm was just an early alias of luke

curiously, on one of the early afx demo tapes shared by ben middleton, there's some unreleased vibert/simmonds tracks included

    image.png.1e8dc98dce5aafdd824fa3b63aca4b0a.png

one of which is called ohm sweet ohm. kraftwerk reference, i know. but still noteworthy in my opinion!

and luke mentioned in an interview that weirs was supposed to come out in 1991

not sure about the truth behind that statement, but it could mean that NCC 1701 was in fact an early version of weirs

i hope you enjoyed my rambling ?

What are those track titles? - i can't make out the writing- def need glasses lol . Interesting stuff though I know they Rephalex kept pushing the Weirs release date back. . I know there's some unreleased Vibert and Simmonds out there just a matter of how much.  Luke played an unreleased Vibert/Simmonds during the Recepticon release mix-athon.  I'm pretty sure Jeremy/Voafose is "retired" I don't think he's actively making music anymore.
