  1. New Lisbon set is pretty nuts, I thought the current round of sets would be variations on Sydney / Dublin, but they've got another hour of material locked down!  Sounding really good as well.

Any speculation on when the next soundboards will come out? ASAP would be great, but I'm guessing after the gigs nearer the end of the year.

  2. I still really like Dialogue but never see it mentioned much. Free jazz sampling Four Tet is still my preferred style.

Went to see him play in a basement in Shoreditch just after it came out, crazy that he's now headlining Coachella etc.

Obligatory 'I liked him before it was cool'.

I have 2 copies of this on vinyl, still listen to it on CD or on my phone, the 1977 (label) vinyl repress from a few years back without stone in focus is dubious, its so crackly, I barely played my copy and it sounds like it was used as a frisbee, thought I had lost my warp copy and found it, sounds much better, the crackling on the sire 1977 version actually sounds OK to my ears but if you didn't want it you can't ignore it, not sure what contraption they pressed it on

My 1977 press sounds pretty good. Mastered from the CD and all that but crackle free. In a bonehead move I still regret a quarter of a century later I returned the brown vinyl to the record store because it was such poor quality. It's worth a few quid these days. Had the 2 x cassette as well but lost it.

  4. Definitely the best Squarepusher album since Ultravisitor IMO, glad he's got over those cheesy trance / EDM stylings for the most part.

Still has the weird thing from Be Up A Hello where the two weakest tracks open the album - once they're out the way it's solid though.  Production much improved from Damogen era - maybe a bit grating on the high end on headphones but sounds great on speakers. Liking the No-U-Turn influence, suits his style well.

  5. Slamstep remix sounds like a migraine, as a rule I'm out once BPM > 200. Leave it for the breakcore crew.

Couldn't make it through the second remix, is there some sort of morse code on there? Might make sense in that respect.

  6. the scalp-fizz fingerpicking on ‘Arkteon 2’, and slowed, kerned like some Jürg Frey meets Derek Bailey mediation in ‘Arkteon 3

I have no idea what this means. I am up for some Dawson's Creek-core though.

  7. Good god he really needs to get off Twitter.  I always pictured Mick Harris as some sage-like bearded mystic, too absorbed in the resonance and distortion on his snare sound to be bothered with worldly affairs.  Instead here he is all-caps ranting about vegans, dole scroungers and 'the woke', interspersed with pictures of his unappetising barbeque creations.

  8. The proper FLAC does sound a whole lot better than the rip, someone must have recorded that from a Crosby into their iPhone.

Still pretty rough round the edges though, strange how his productions sound so much rougher and more basic than the stuff from 15 years ago. It's an aesthetic choice I guess, but his beatmaking skills were so on point back then whereas these days it just sounds like a few sample pack loops.

Production aside it sounds like each 12 minute song has a pretty good 6 minute track trying to get out. Those ultra-naff early 90s hardcore samples in Dreamfear have to go for a start.

  9. A couple of listens in, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Best tracks are probably the two already released along with the last track. Other bits sound a bit like a sludge metal guitarist practicing while they wait for the rest of the band to turn up.

I'd steer clear of the white vinyl pre release too, my pressing sounds rough as hell.

wonder why these were excluded from warp tapes collection

    From the post:

this tape didn't get us signed to warp. in fact they sent us a boilerplate rejection letter (something like: 'thanks for the tape, we're not looking to sign anyone at the moment').

after sending a few more tapes and getting those letters back it wasn't until late '91 that we got a call, the track that did it was Crystel.

As I remember the Warp tapes were a compilation of the tracks that didn't make the cut while putting together Incunabula with Warp.

  11. This thread inspired me to dust off the vinyl and give it a spin at an appropriate volume. Still sounds pretty sharp!

Never really clocked it previously but 'axiom' is a proper banger.

Folks should give 'the fifth column' more of a chance too. I always thought it was a bit of a dull track to finish the album but listening again there's a lot of interesting stuff going on. Minimalist d&b done really well.

  12. £50 at Juno so you can save a few quid there.

Still remember buying this on release day at HMV, guy at the counter was a big photek fan, ended up having a chat about all the  12"s.

Still holds up pretty well today (though my copy admittedly looks a bit battered, stayed in my DJ bag for 'smoke rings' for a couple of years at least).

Same. €25 for WAV. Perhaps the offer was only valid yesterday, as part of their advent calender thingy? If so, I've slept on it.

Nope it was just a Bleep pricing fuckup.  It was up for an hour or so before someone realized they'd put the individual price up for the whole set. A few lucky punters got in before they realized I think.

just bought this guy for 600 on ebay. any recommendations where to start with tutorials?  I have never used it before but all my friends have one.

    Elektron Analog Rytm

Cuckoo's tutorials are often a good start if you've never used Elektron gear before. The rytm is a great bit of kit but it's approach to sample management / kits / projects / patterns etc. takes some getting used to.

Definitely worth updating it to version 1.70 before getting started as well, there's been a lot of improvements since it came out and the new firmware from 2 days ago has an interesting Euclidean sequencer option amongst other things.
