I've been really struggling writing melodies recently. I used to write all of my melodies on my guitar, no problem, they would write themselves. Now I'm trying to depart from that and write on the keyboard or write by arranging samples, and it's really tough. Anyone got a nifty trick they use to get kick-started on a good melody? For example, would you start with a simple bassline and then start building on that? Or a simple keyboard lick first? It's weird how shitty my keyboard melodies sound, whereas on the guitar they always sounded pretty good to me. Maybe it has something to do with the layout.

http://wavepot.com/ Try out some of the premade projects on the right side - this is pretty neat stuff from a programming perspective.

Well, that ones are not like to be done by Richard itself, but sounds, from a composition perspective, intriguingly similar... I found myself clicking and clicking in loops to listen. To taste the flavour of this computer algorithms, try the 3rd link first and optionally, enjoy as much as I do =D_ http://xifeng.weebly.com/bytebeats.html

How many of you use Pro Tools in producing music? I work in Pro Tools almost every day at work, but I'm editing and mixing for post-production. So music production is at a very low minimum. I make my tracks 95% of the time in BuzzTracker and have been doing so since it pretty much came out. I love it as I can easily get into it and bang out a track very quickly since I know it inside and out. But I feel the need to expand (or even limit) my palette and habits to shake me out of routines and 'no fail' methods in composing. I dabbled in the instrument plug-ins in Pro Tools and had some fun, but it's a different beast altogether compared to the tracker style of composing. I'd just like to read some of your approaches to composing in Pro Tools to give me a few ideas I never considered. And maybe someone else had the same tracker background who 'graduated' to Pro Tools? Thanks!

So I had an idea. Me and some of my friends really like music and stuff. One of them will study music, but that's something else. The point of this thread is to seek suggestions and opinions about starting a sound design and composition service for (for now) amateur films, animations, publicity (we might add animation production too, and maybe video). The interesting thing here is that the 3 of us have 19 years old, and we're about to start university, but we need money and this idea sounds cool. We have the tools (computers, daws, vsts, piano and guitar), and the hability (in guitar, piano, creativity). What do you think? We might post some flyers around. We already have some music created (from our hobby) like a "look, here it is what we can do". Obviously we will create better stuff, but one thing I've learned is that people would pay lots for whoever makes the work they don't want to do. So, what do you think?

are there special DAWs that are used to create them? is it worth to buy some old amiga to do them? what about trackers? Does it make sense do reduce the samplerate in ableton to get the sound?
