  1. I searched and couldn’t find anything, but I know we’ve talked about this before and it’s probably a thread: Reading the harmony thread and several others on here about “rules” and all those pesky little standards we all have regarding them got me curious. What are all your opinions of sampling other artists work- rules, etiquette, what should or shouldn’t be, etc. Not trying to open the whole “is a dj a musician” debate at all- I’m only specifically talking about making a “non-remix” track, or whatever. Your original work- how do u go about deciding what’s off limits or not. No judgement at all, just curious about everyone’s process. Personally, I draw the line with sampling things that I like, which are “too close” to the artists I may consider in the same field as me. And this can affect the way I like music too. Examples: can’t stand listening to Front Line Assembly or ltj bukem sample afx. I still like those artists a lot, but those tracks I can’t really get into. The ideal sample for me is something like the background jazz music in a 70s instructional record or whatever- u know what I mean. The crate digging archaeological aspect has always been what I am into. What I dig. But that doesn’t mean I don’t listen to plenty of stuff that has no rules. In some ways I feel restricted, but I can’t escape my rules. I do like dj shadow, or fsol, who have both sampled things that would have been “off limits” for me. Bjork, tangerine dream, jean Michael jarre- I just think they don’t belong chopped up in my stuff. Again, this is no judgement at all- I really just want opinions on it. I read an article in grooves magazine once, years ago, where this guy was talking about sampling being like fast food, and it not satisfying you the same way creating something without samples would. He could have been talking about sample cd packs, tho. That brings up other concepts too- what other media is ok to sample (I don’t really have any rules with movies/tv etc)- I never liked the sample pack thing- but I have used them a couple times, really rarely and still trying to use obscure or outdated ones from cds or whatever. Amen, think, Apache- these are all ok to me because they have been sampled to shit. Idk- just wanna know your thoughts on it!
  2. just happened across this YT channel that's basically just a trove of tape rips (mostly it seems at least) of DJ sets. clicked on a few and listening to this FSOL one right now: and starting this Carl Cox mix right now it sounds wild: [edit: that bassline that comes in at 22:11 is so goddamned dirty. so many awesome synth lines all throughout this thing tho fuckin hell] anyway i imagine a lot of this is available elsewhere but i'm guessing there's definitely some in here that isn't. maybe dig and share some gems. seemed maybe worth its own topic for sharing ones from this channel and similar era rarities stuff in the same vein...archive.org probably has some up there as well.
  3. http://cunzdimension.bandcamp.com/album/spa-flip-1 really warming up to this insane netlabel recently, this release being some of the best stuff on there. it's very varied (the label). this album is like juke vs. seapunk vs. enya combined which makes for a beautiful result. 10 / 10 peac
  4. Engadget has an interesting report on how Microsoft lent its tech prowess to DJ Alison Wonderland's live show: https://www.engadget.com/2017/08/02/microsoft-concert-visuals-alison-wonderland-kinect-surface-book/
  5. I did a mix of some recent (and not so recent) drone / ambient / techno-ish stuff, mostly played at the wrong speeds. This is a straight from vinyl mix and its all layered rather than beat matched. I think the tunes work together quite well. More mixes to come soon - all from my extensive vinyl collection. I am planning house, techno, trance and d&b mixes where I can actually do some proper mixing - this was a palette cleanser to get me back into the mood for DJing. Note:- There is a bodge transition into the Autechre tune because my wife kept trying to talk to me. Edit:- Complete with surface noise. I love that shit.
  6. Do you like harder styles of techno and IDM? I do too! https://www.facebook.com/freddhyphen This might be a persona of mine you didn't know existed. Be wary of the harsh style of music! Enjoy!

I play everything from bass music, funk, drone, old IDM tunes, my own unreleased tunes and doing live impromptu ambient and experimental performances. I will post in here when I'm live and what genre's going on. http://mixlr.com/idiotiste-records/ Currently playing various bass music for 3 hours
  9. This is one of my biggest and baddest sets ever made, featuring 4 hours of continuous party music, between all kinds of genres between twerk and dubstep and lots of mashup goodness by yours truly. A lot of love went into this, enjoy!
  10. Last weekend I spun some dubstep and trap tunes at an event in my town, featuring a bunch of local artists, rappers and DJ's, sponsored by a local youth organisation. It was originally going to be outdoors in the middle of the town square, but due to heavy rain we had to move to a nearby club. After a ton of work disassembling and moving all the equipment in the rain, we started much later than planned but things got pretty wild and fun anyway!
  11. hello. i'm very much in need of a preset sample of a guy saying 'dj'. i remember it used to come with everything pretty much and it was super nice. you put it on anything and it becomes way better. now i cant find it anywhere and its become a very serious life journey for me to find it. does anyone have access to this? i looked around on freesound and found a sample of a guy saying 'dj something something' and cut the dj part out, but it doesnt posses the power of the original as he pitches his voice up on the 'j' instead of down. if anyone could help me with this i would die of happiness and maybe even be reborn as a techno god and if i am i will expose you to things so bizarre that your heart will pump pure cum instead of blood. sincerely, waschbar
  12. There are a lot of fans out there of my Dreamer's Digest chillout mix, made in late 09 - I have been requested to upload it again and again since I first made it, which I've happily obliged to. What you may not know is that I made a follow up part in mid -10 that unfortunately was lost to the ages after a very brief period on the web... until now!!! Just found it on an old hard drive and had to upload it again! Lots of mashing up of classic chillout goodness!

  14. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMwIBkShyzw I did an earnest search to make sure no one else has posted about this. This is one of the finest things I've discovered in a long time. People joke that it's so tense, and I get that joke, but there is a strange kind of tension there. My favorite part about it though is how much the dialogue, especially that of the two main characters, reminds me of playing Shenmue. If you loved Shenmue as one of the digital masterpieces of the 20th century for its strengths and flaws equally, then you will want to check this out.
  15. Since 2008 there is a torrent floating around featuring tons of mid 90's hip hop filled Dutch radio shows (http://kuiken.co/search/dutch%20mastaz/0/99/0), today I've uploaded the content of this torrent to mixcloud for ease of streaming, listening.. ..although there is the obvious Dutch chatter in between tracks, freestyles and what not, there is still enough gold to wade through for non-Dutchies imo :) Check all the collected Dutch Mastaz shows from the torrent here: http://www.mixcloud.com/plugexpert/ Big respect to Solo11 for recording and digitizing all his cassette tapes & theboombap.nl for sharing the .torrent! (read more about the origins here: Read this (Dutch): http://www.theboombap.nl/theBoards/read.php?1,1205439)) Random example show:

  20. So I've DJ'ed at my university radio station for over a year now and have had a blast playing tons of artists that I have earned a great appreciation for. Next week will be last the week of the semester as well as the last show of the year. As a special theme, I am pooling songs from friends and people I have met over the years. Even though I have not met most of you, I have heard lots of great artists on board here and would like to give back to the community by playing some of your tunes over the airwaves in Columbia, MO. My show is primarily focused on hip-hop/electronica/downtempo, however, your music does not have to fit in this category. If you have a song or two that you feel is a pinnacle in your music making career, post a link here to where I can download it and I'll let everyone know what songs I will be choosing to play. I have a 2 hour span for my show, so I can fit quite a few of you guys into the rotation. Just try to keep it under 6 minutes. SUBMISSION DEADLINE: This Tuesday, Dec. 13, by 10pm. My show is on TONIGHT, Dec 14 from Midnight - 2 AM CST. Here's a link to stream my show so you can hear your songs when I play it: http://kcou.fm/ My facebook page for the show, like it and the gods shall smile upon you --- http://www.facebook....135410776569898 I'm especially excited for this one, so if you guys would like to contribute, feel free to post here and I will give you full cred, a little bio if you want, and much love. ALRIGHT THE RESULTS OF THE SHOW!! CHECK IT OUT!! http://soundcloud.com/deltatones/the-dustbowl-last-show-of-2011 -Joe
