  1. I've made a little walkthrough for Samplebrain, Aphex Twin's new sound design tool. Hope you all enjoy it.
  2. I searched and couldn’t find anything, but I know we’ve talked about this before and it’s probably a thread: Reading the harmony thread and several others on here about “rules” and all those pesky little standards we all have regarding them got me curious. What are all your opinions of sampling other artists work- rules, etiquette, what should or shouldn’t be, etc. Not trying to open the whole “is a dj a musician” debate at all- I’m only specifically talking about making a “non-remix” track, or whatever. Your original work- how do u go about deciding what’s off limits or not. No judgement at all, just curious about everyone’s process. Personally, I draw the line with sampling things that I like, which are “too close” to the artists I may consider in the same field as me. And this can affect the way I like music too. Examples: can’t stand listening to Front Line Assembly or ltj bukem sample afx. I still like those artists a lot, but those tracks I can’t really get into. The ideal sample for me is something like the background jazz music in a 70s instructional record or whatever- u know what I mean. The crate digging archaeological aspect has always been what I am into. What I dig. But that doesn’t mean I don’t listen to plenty of stuff that has no rules. In some ways I feel restricted, but I can’t escape my rules. I do like dj shadow, or fsol, who have both sampled things that would have been “off limits” for me. Bjork, tangerine dream, jean Michael jarre- I just think they don’t belong chopped up in my stuff. Again, this is no judgement at all- I really just want opinions on it. I read an article in grooves magazine once, years ago, where this guy was talking about sampling being like fast food, and it not satisfying you the same way creating something without samples would. He could have been talking about sample cd packs, tho. That brings up other concepts too- what other media is ok to sample (I don’t really have any rules with movies/tv etc)- I never liked the sample pack thing- but I have used them a couple times, really rarely and still trying to use obscure or outdated ones from cds or whatever. Amen, think, Apache- these are all ok to me because they have been sampled to shit. Idk- just wanna know your thoughts on it!
  3. I've known about this video for years and it's kinda crazy how many views it has gotten over time Regardless of opinion about this band or song, you can't argue that feeling of when he pitches and equalizes a sample just so and it suddenly becomes a sound you are familiar with Anyone have any other videos like this? I.e. "remaking" an artists song, sample treating, how to create a widely-recognizable sound, etc. I find them both enriching and vastly entertaining
  4. Just heard this on Spotify at work... c'mon really? lifting an entire SAW II track just like that and dropping an easy beat and some sfx under it?? prob less than 1% of those 1/2 million people who heard this track on that youtube upload thinks its beautiful melodic ambient progression was written by some new chillout/ chillwave artist named Koda. Great. the weird thing is with artists like this, its hard to say whether they're big enough to have been able to legally use the sample and whether they're crediting the original artist anywhere (all i could find was on their soundcloud of the track - the following hashtags: #koda #smooth #aphex #twin with no information under the cloud. As if anyone can put those two hashtags together to make any sense of it. I'm not seeing a discogs or allmusic entry for this artist where i can check composition credits. not i really give a fuck, but it'd be nice to know that people aren't getting play counts or worse, sales, based on lifting tracks and re-packaging it as their own w/ out permission or proper crediting (the artist is also selling this track on iTunes). he's also playing on official spotify chill wave playlists, etc.
  5. Salutations, gentle creatures! Here's a new album that was released a couple weeks ago. It's available for purchase on Bandcamp here: http://williamsbraintree.bandcamp.com You can also stream the entire album on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g81H9sNTzsE
  6. Hello WATMM! I've wanted to pick up a sampler for live performance and jamming for a while now. There's a ton of cheap midi pads on the market, but just about every single one that I can find requires ableton and a laptop. I don't have a laptop right now, and I'm not interested in being shackled to one every time I make music- so what's an affordable sampler, sans software?

    J Dilla sampling BoC?

I was listening to this track by Dilla off the Ruff Draft EP today and the hook/riff (kicks in at 0:33) really reminded me of either a BoC or Autechre track.. I was wondering if anyone else thinks the same, or if they can identify the sample? Sort of reminds me of I Will Get It Tattooed by BoC but I dont think that is it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjsXELHVu44
  10. I have been working on this thing for a little bit and wanted to know what people thought about a few issues. First, is it any good? Am I violating some production rules somewhere? I haven't gone nuts getting everything to sounds right, but I did go for a kinda dusty vibe. http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=3313111676/size=medium/t=5/ I have long loved that Gescom track. The first two minutes are fire and then it sorta disintegrates in a cool way, but I alway want it to stay on track and elaborate on the early nastiness. So, is it totally lame that I straight lifted the opening, put it in a sampler, and looped it and added stuff?
  11. Hi guys. I'm music producer from Riga, Latvia and I'd really appreciate it if you gave this a listen: https://soundcloud.com/geniegarrett/geniegarrettfrozen Thank You.
  12. I scanned the forum to see if this sort of topic already exists, but I couldn't find one. So I think I'm in the clear. Anyway, many of us are Music Makers. Out of curiosity, what are some songs out there, from any genre, you would like to remix? Also, if you have already done a remix in the past, perhaps you would like to share it via SoundCloud. Admins and Mods are welcome to edit this topic as needed.
  13. http://soundcloud.com/daltonmusic/death-by-toejam-burs-mashup Rave/Hardcore tune/mashup that samples a few songs. I don't normally produce this kind of music and I'm not sure what to make of it. I'm curious to hear your opinions on this. Thanks!
