So as many of you long-time members recall, we had a chat module on the site we called CHATMM that was built into the forums. It was heavily used until the forum software vendor retired it, and for a long time there wasn't any decent replacements. When Houston Day for Night happened, we started using Discord to keep in touch at the festival and later we implemented a WATMM Discord that really didn't take off as the integration with the forum wasn't good, and was problematic in validating users, etc. Once we upgraded the forum software, third-party vendors offered integrated chatroom addons which we have now, and the developer has steadily been improving things to the point now that the current chatroom is far superior in features and functionality than the original one ever was. Yet, nobody seems to use it - why? I'd like to get some real feedback about the reasons, and yes I know there's another Discord that a few WATMM users frequent - however, I don't manage or maintain that Discord, so as far as I am concerned it is not associated with WATMM, and would rather it not be since the behavior there is contrary to the rules and direction set out by WATMM that users here abide to.

So as some of you may recall, we lost our dedicated chatroom, CHATMM due to the forum provider getting out of the dedicated chatroom providing service. There were some potential replacements, but all were costly and didn't offer the same level of integration that we had with CHATMM. So, as a stopgap solution, a suggestion was made to use Discord as a replacement. Discord has been fine, and recently with the forum upgrade, I have been able to leverage addons for the forum to more tightly integrate it into the forums (new topics get a link in the Discord, for example). It still doesn't 'feel' the same though, and it's still very disconnected from the site. There's been a new development and now there is a potentially viable replacement chatroom for the forums that I have been researching. Hello. The baton has been passed, end of an era etc etc. Friendly Foil has retired as curator of the CHATMM compilations and Roasty and I have taken over. The next theme will be Academic Electronic Music. We mean this in a vintage 1930-1960/70 sense. Stiff audio experiments, geometric diagrammatic artwork, men in white/tweed coats, smoking pipes and toiling over vast machines with blinking lights spilling out ticker tape. Also, we'd appreciate it if you also submitted at least a paragraph with your track explaining what the concept was and how you went about executing it. 'show your working out' so to speak. FAQ: Yes. Wav or Aiff I thought "show your working out" p much had this covered You can submit up to two tracks, if you want. If you're collaborating on a track with someone else, you can submit that too, though it'll count as one of the two tracks. Please keep them at a sensible length though (don't make me force a time limit - but if absolutely must - 8 minutes max) Some examples: Feel free to post other examples.

Some of us guys thought we could use another project to help us all be creative, and we came up with this. You have the whole of February to make 1 EP containing up to 15 tracks at a max total length of 15 minutes. Anybody is allowed to submit any content under any artist name, provided it's your own material, not offensive and not OLD material! No folder dumps! There are no genre restrictions, make anything you want. If you are stumped for ideas, message me and I will send you two randomly selected words, and the combination must be the title of your EP. The rest is up to you. Submit your EP in a ZIP to me, either as a private message or to mikewestaudio (at) gmail.com , together with all relevant info, before March 1st. The final result will be compiled into one MASSIVE digital release - including top of the line mastering, provided that you don't brickwall your tracks. It will be available as pay-what-you-want and ALL proceeds will be donated to the international charity Medicines Sans Frontieres / Doctors Without Borders. So, what excuses have you got? Try something new out, challenge yourself, just do some music. Let's go! I've re-enabled CHATMM, and unlike the last time, this time it is limited to paying members only - since CHATMM costs 25.00 annually for the 20 concurrent member license, it's only fair those who are actively contributing to the forum get the privileged of using it. Anyone with Members Plus and higher memberships can use it.
