Exm

So I did a search, and I didnt see any sort of main topic for exm or his music-- just those related to a release if he had one coming up-- so I figured id make an umbrella one for discussion on our favs of his discography, if that's alright. (btw: Riyl autechre, phoenecia, with some melodic work thrown in.) First off, Im a huge fan of the guys work, and so many of his releases have become top favorites of mine: Modulus, Overscore (+), more recently Comp, released this month (which is perfect for anyone new to his work imo), both this years self released works MMLXXVII and Odd Times are amazing as well and are definite growers, especially the prior LP. His collab releases with Mitoma are all top tier, and I constantly return to them: FF0000, I/0 Disc, and this year's E|M. Highly recommended. But my favorite of his is 2015's llmnt on Touched, which has become one of my favorite IDM albums ever. Didnt dig it much at first, but it grew on me soooooo hard, and I cant stop spinning it. Worth throwing in there-- he also made my favorite IDM song ever "Meltt", which is the epic, 15-minute closer on 2017's Modulus. If you havent heard that, definitely give it a few spins. Gorgeous song! https://touched.bandcamp.com/track/meltt Enough gushing from me though, any other big fans? Favorite albums or tracks?

8. It’s truly ridiculous how quickly the first half of the year has gone. But that’s a good thing, because Touched Music has more releases under its belt and I have to wait less time for good things - good things like the next instalment in the Touched catalogue, “FfAtP”. This is a joint effort between Touched’s instigator Martin Boulton, AKA Min-Y-Llan and all-round good guy Floating Spirits, with some excellent remixes thrown in to boot. Listening through for the first time you wouldn’t guess this is a split EP by any means. The tracks flow incredibly well and if these two artists were political parties they should definitely form a coalition. Seamless emulation of each other never gets in the way of their respective styles. For Min-Y-Llan this is quite the departure from the melodic and for the most part happy things we have come to expect. It’s dark, moody and suspicious with great use of spoken word samples. Floating Spirits offers big sounds that are layered to perfection - it’s foot-tappingly good. There’s rarely a quiet moment and even those always have something going on. As a bonus the release finishes off with a group of remixes from other Touched contributors, as always willing to lend a hand with the great cause that is Macmillan Cancer Support. BLN, Quadrable, John Callaghan, Stoobz, AtOm AnT and exm all contribute to the latter half of the album. Hailing from Romania, The UK, Germany, The USA and The Netherlands it’s a real international roster of artists putting their unique spin on what is already a great record. Considering their impressive release history on labels such as Warp Records, Antigen Records, Concrete Plastic, Alternate Media Tapes & Hymen (just to name a few), whether they’re newcomers or returning to Touched Music it’s great to have them on board and helping out. 9. EP Released 25th Feb Let's face it. February's a bit rubbish - and let me stop you before you try to convince me that Valentine's day is a shining light in an otherwise dark and miserable month. But one thing can save us and that's Touched Music's love for us all. Slapping us in the face with the musical equivalent of a dozen red roses is the latest release from exm - "Overscore". It's hard to put a finger on exm's style and that's just how I like it - this EP refuses to sit in any stylistic pigeonhole and draws from a lot of technical skills and influences. I've said it before about the similarities to Autechre and that's still present but there's so much more going on here. The first track alone is a journey in itself - starting with sound reminiscent of Hans Zimmer's depiciton of vast, open, astronomical nothingness but better it gives way to a rhythmic party that can only be described as a sentient electronic hurdy-gurdy with poor intentions against humankind. Finishing with a digital call to prayer this is just the opening of a fantastic six-track EP. Sudden key changes, great timbral layering and pleasing dissonance are the icing on the proverbial cake. This work manages to relax and unnerve at the same time and doesn't tire for one second. As a bonus we're treated to a remix that's so well done it's neither so similar to its parent nor a complete departure - back-to-back they sound like they could have been composed together as separate acts. Do the right thing, winter's nearly over so why not let this latest festival of noise into your life and help Macmillan Cancer Support along the way? Wise words from Alexander Shum
10. New EP & Remixes Out Now… Remixes From B12 Nonima Floating Spirits Min-Y-Llan Tom Roberts Surface 10 James Murray It’s sometimes hard to recognise when it actually is Christmas. Especially when the recent spate of quality releases on the Touched Music label make it feel like presents are raining down upon us all. But I can assure you that time of year is upon us all once more and to make things extra festive is an EP from Abereiddy Astronomical Society. Putting this on for the first time I turned my attention to other work, that which required concentration and little distraction. The first half of this EP greatly relaxed me, giving throwback feelings to teenage years listening to ambient works. You know something is successfully ambient enough when it’s non-intrusive but produced so well that you tend to notice every little detail without trying. Completing my other tasks it was apparent to me that I’d not noticed the passage of time. Spinning it up again I thought of other releases with stellar themes - Tomita’s reworking of Holst’s The Planets, Aleksi Perälä’s Astrobotnia series, Stars Of The Lid - and realised I could easily be auditioning any part of one of them, not really caring about what I was listening to but at the same time contemplating greater things. That’s the beauty of this EP, it’s a real concentration helper, something which is very welcome in a sea of musical output sometimes so complex that you feel you’d need some extra ear cells just to hear it properly. And just when I thought it couldn’t get more agreeable, a slew of remixes follow from the likes of B12, exm, Nonima, Floating Spirits, James Murray, Surface 10, Tom Roberts and Touched Music’s very own founder Min-Y-Llan. If anything this is going to be a fantastic and welcome way to drown out the noise of arguing families this coming week. Words by Alexander Shum Get it here Pay What You Like.
