they've got a new one coming out this year. working with an actual drummer this time so we'll see how that changes their sound, new vocalist too, and still no bass player listed, who knows.... always cautious about any band that goes away for 10 years then comes back (especially with a drastically different lineup) but....nonetheless i'm looking forward to this and hopeful. they posted a tiny clip to Instagram, not sure how that's gonna embed or link out so whatever https://www.instagram.com/p/CKHL1-8J78V/

One of my favorite musicians - Fenriz of Darkthrone - has a newish website and associated FB page where he posts his personal "best of" finds of obscure and rare metal bands. Besides being a legend within the black metal community, and easily the most rational and humble of the innovators, he's a avid music listener. He works as a mail sorter (both he and Darkthrone member Nocturno Culto refuse to give up their day jobs or tour for money) and listens to something like 10 hours of music a day, including stuff he rips off demo cassettes and other analog formats, and now he's recommending his best finds. I personally never get listen to enough metal to call myself a proper metalhead but what I do like just about everything Fenriz name-checks - he's a proper expert on the subject. He's also an electronic music fan - he had an underrated ambient synth project called Neptune Towers in the 90s and I read in a recent interview that he prefers Squarepusher's version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" to the original. Anyway, well worth checking out. I figure some of you would want to check it out, I know other fans of him and BM in general are on watmm.

When I was 13-14, I used to make instrumental industrial rock/metal on a 4 track cassette recorder. My main instruments were the Yamaha PSS 680 Music Station (keyboard) and my guitar/fx pedals. This project was called Machine. I recently digitized these tapes (along with everything else I ever recorded before going digital), and found that I still really liked most of it. So I decided to master a few of my favorites from this collection and release them as an album. 13 year old me would be very happy. Looking for good metal/doom/sludge *without* ridiculous vocals.
Guest posted a topic in Music Discussion
Hi, For some time I've been looking for some good metal/doom/sludge, whatever bands that don't have the commonly termed "cringe-worthy" vocals that kind of kill the whole presentation. I'm open to bands without vocals completely (old Earth), and I am familiar with some of the classics that do have nice vocals (Electric Wizard, Sleep), but I'm looking for something either new or bands I haven't heard of before, which I'm sure is obvious by the thread title... I know I've made a thread seeking the same sort of music without vocals, so maybe this can focus on bands and albums that people like, with an instrument of the human voice that doesn't bother them to the point of shutting the music off. Even if they do scream or yell, if you like them, and the singing feels genuine, please share it by all means! There's a doom band out of Chicago called Indian that has a vocalist who definitely screams, but for some reason I like and don't mind his voice (a great band if you haven't heard of them before). This extends to all "metal" forms, sludge, doom, whatever, as I like doom a lot but I am looking for faster, rhythmic bands/albums as well. I love you all. <^^>- 51 replies

Devin Townsend's double album project Z2 is up for pre-order! Can't believe there isn't a thread for this yet... "Transcending the boundaries of conventional music releases once again, the newest album by the Devin Townsend Project is a double studio album available also as deluxe 3CD digipak with special artwork in embossed silver-foil slipcase and stunning 4LP+2CD box. On “Z²” you can enjoy a massive double-album battle between the textured lushness of DTP's 'Sky Blue' and the orchestral bombast of the Ziltoidian 'Dark Matters'. “Z²” features the Universal Choir - 2000 audio files of individual fans singing along to selected songs, assembled by Devin Townsend and included on the songs “Z²”, “Before We Die” and “Dimension Z”. CD 101. Rejoice (04:16) 02. Fallout (04:30) 03. Midnight Sun (04:58) 04. A New Reign (04:52) 05. Universal Flame (04:39) 06. Warrior (03:31) 07. Sky Blue (03:52) 08. Silent Militia (04:28) 09. Rain City (07:45) 10. Forever (03:45) 11. Before We Die (08:24) 12. The Ones Who Love (01:32) CD 2 01. Z² (03:59) 02. From Sleep Awake (03:00) 03. Ziltoidian Empire (06:25) 04. War Princess (08:17) 05. Deathray (04:43) 06. March Of The Poozers (06:24) 07. Wandering Eye (03:40) 08. Earth (07:38) 09. Ziltoid Goes Home (06:20) 10. Through The Wormhole (03:43) 11. Dimension Z (06:13)" Didn't know it was a DTP album as well as a Ziltoid one. The first Ziltoid record is one of my favourite albums of all forever so I'm excited for a sequel from the sock puppet of dual-omnisciences. [youtubehd]H5BqyluKkk0[/youtubehd] As I saved money due to not winning the Syro lottery, I bought the clear vinyl set of this instead. In retrospect, perhaps misfortune did me a favour. :D

It's been a few years since I listened to him, but I put a few albums on last night. Anybody familiar with his music? Too gimmicky? It is kinda funeraldoom-y, but it's so minimal and sparse that I can't even judge it by metal standards.
