ШЩЦ, May 13, 2021 https://ssshitsss.bandcamp.com/album/kyiv-summer-tracks-2014-2021 Simple joyful synth house, light electro, melodic techno by Ukrainian electronic musician – Bodya Konakov. Nostalgia for rave with funny music.

Sha Sha Kimbo draws endless amounts of inspiration from the rave scene of the 1990s, honing her own high-energy club excursions while gliding through the house, techno and breaks styles of the jaw-swinging, acid-tinged past. On “Omega High’, the final cut from her debut album, Mind Your Head, the producer swirls sunny breaks into urgent synth stabs, closing the record on a powerfully nostalgic high.

As 2019 approaches, the realisation that close to 10 years has passed since Warp20 is... quite a sobering thought. I remember Warp20 being quite the celebration by Warp; a massive and lavish box set was released with some special treats (Autechre - Oval Moon (IBC Mix), wew), plenty of live shows (including a memorable night at Sheffield's Magna - that Squarepusher set remains etched in my mind to this day), screenings at Park Hill Flats and the pop-up Warp shop... everything related to Warp20 just had a good vibe to it. Warp30 approaches. Will we see as much fervour and exaitment as Warp20? I'd like to think Warp will want to go large again, in one way or another. In the meantime, consider this a nostalgia thread if nothing else. I'll pull some old related pics and stuff from the archive, if only to have a little corner of watmm dedicated to some good ol' Warpy times. Feel free to do likewise! In that spirit, here's an old pinch of mine from 2009 - it was screened the Friday before the main weekend celebrations in Sheffield (I think I've seen a similar rip surface on youtube before, but in worse quality) Artwork

MEL Magazine has a great article on Mallwave/Vaporwave, and the "false nostalgia" listeners too young to have directly experienced it have and why: https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/the-teens-who-listen-to-mallwave-are-nostalgic-for-an-experience-theyve-never-had Another great example of Mallwave/Vaporwave: https://mistakenforrobots.bandcamp.com/

http://maisonblanche.bandcamp.com/ After going through a creative lull, I wanted to try my hand at a bit of vaporwave, and these 14 tracks are the result. Short, sweet, and nostalgic, Maison Blanche will make you drift to a time where VHS was king, perfume and fashion ads were cheekily sensual and that your cable preview channel was your only solace in a amnesiac night of boredom. Each tracks was named after once prominent, but long since defunct businesses in the metro New Orleans area, making this a hazy love letter to days gone past. So sit back, relax, take a deep breath, and let the vapors do the rest...

I cannot sing the praises of this release enough, but I will make an earnest attempt. There's something so ethereally beautiful about this album that I feel I'm doing it a disservice to do the "let's break down this work of art with words on the internet" thing, but I want to connect with some folks out there who have also been touched by it. It masterfully oscillates between forlorn and optimistic, while not being overbearing in either direction (see: Elliot Smith or Animal Collective). It's employs all the modern production techniques of the time it was released, yet is timeless sounding due to its use of live instrumentation and nonsense lyrics. It could have come out this year, or could be a digital remaster of some psychadelic rock band from the 70s. The lyrics themselves, devoid of any literal meaning, don't allow a difference in worldview between the artist & listener to get in the way of the emotion being expressed with the voice as an instrument. The unpronounceable title of the album & lack of track titles couldn't be more fitting for the musical content within.
