@Extralife nice list, thanks for including links! i'm listening to the colours of infinity record and it's really good, big fan of that lofi warmth.

It’s excellent. You have to listen to his first album if you haven’t yet.

That was my soundtrack to living through Hurricane Harvey.

Extralife AOTYs for 2020

Morphology - Horta Proxima (best electro album of the past several years, actually)

Melted Self - Spectral Disorder (also my fav Bandcamp write-up of the year)

That Morphology album is really good, forgot about that one too.

Thanks for posting the Melted Self link. Missed this one and it's sick. Love the art as well HS. And yes, that write-up is worth the price of admission lol

Autechre’s all caps album pair SIGN & PLUS with Taylor Swift’s all lower caps album pair folklore & evermore is a slightly interesting juxtaposition

A few I don't think have been mentioned yet:

George Clanton & Nick Hexum - S/T. when I first saw this pairing I was like wtf, but this is a really solid chillwave/pop/'90s album. never been a big fan of George's vocals, but here Nick's syrupy croon fits perfectly. this was my album of the summer as I hung out in the backyard solo.

Jeff Parker - Suite for Max Brown. guitarist from Tortoise releases another outstanding solo album. there are a few tracks on here that sound very much Tortoise TNT.

Pallbearer - Forgotten Days. I can't stop listening to the track "Silver Wings" on here. so incredibly good. attn: Tool - this is how you do a 13 minute prog/metal track. the first few minutes of the track sound like some of Mogwai's heavier stuff.

Jaga Jazzist - Pyramid. never been able to really get into them before this. their previous stuff I'd find had some great moments, but would get boring after awhile. this new one is the best I've heard from them, if you like spacy, jazzy, psych stuff.

William Tyler - New Vanitas. I think it's technically an ep, but it's like 33 minutes, so enough to just about consider it an album. more gorgeous guitar work from him, a lot more ambient than indie/country sounding.

A few that have already been mentioned:

Hum - Inlet. can't believe how good this is. not very often does a band come back after a 20 year hiatus and release their best album yet.

Autechre - Sign. I'm in no way an Ae fanboy, they lost me a long time ago. hell, I still love Incunabula. this one blew me away. the first thing I've bought from them since Untilted.

Wagon Christ - Recepticon. IMO the best thing Luke's done in a long, long time. so many classic WC sounds here, and very well produced.

Real Estate - The Main Thing. these guys are the best when it comes to making laidback, catchy, indie rock. they've hardly had a bad album since they started.

Kruder & Dorfmeister - 1995. I still cannot believe that despite the fact these guys are legends in the downtempo/trip-hop/chill out-whatever scene, that this is in fact their first proper album release. when I first heard about it I was worried it would sound dated as hell, but this is top notch.

comps:

Clams Casino - Instrumental Relics. some of my favorite tracks by him are on here. mostly stuff from the instrumental mixtapes 1 &2 and the Rainforest ep.

Casino vs. Japan - Echo Counting. this just recently came out, but I haven't been able to stop listening to it daily. just like with K&D, so awesome when one of those long ago artists you haven't listened to in ages pops up out of nowhere and puts out an excellent release. I'd never heard any of these tracks before, so like a brand new album for me.

here we are. pick your #1 of 2016.

these are all records that were cited in the nominations thread 4 times or more. this seemed like a healthy cutoff, and also allowed for less than 50 choices which is the max for a single poll question. there were some cool picks that didn't make the cutoff, alas. some of the top contenders were as expected, although Danny Brown and Huerco S got a lot of love also.

only one choice is possible in this poll, as we've already pooled together the top x based on citations. this isn't so much about which record was the most generally appreciated in 2016 - though there will be a winner in the end - but more about which records were most important to individuals and if there is a pattern there. I'm interested to see if this will result in some more diversity.

can't remember who normally does this, or if it even is done by a regular person. anyway, post your contenders for AOTY itt (LPs only, let's have a separate thread for EPs) and let's follow with a poll for the top picks.

      my top pick currently:

      other picks:

Nails - You Will Never Be One of Us
      Ital Tek - Hollowed
The Body - One Day You Will Ache Like I Ache
      Shackleton - Devotional Songs
      Neurosis - Fires Within Fires
      Sumac - What One Becomes
      JK Flesh - Rise Above
      Dälek - Asphalt For Eden
      Plaid - The Digging Remedy

you will notice the distinct absence of elseq and that is because I don't consider it an "album". Ae seem to be moving away from that concept entirely and I'm keen to see where it goes. but all things equal, I do consider elseq the best music of 2016.

honourable mention to Andy Stott - Too Many Voices. this still has some classic Andy moments but it's a bit inconsistent and it hasn't pulled me like his other works. it may grow on me. some killer tracks for sure though but not solid through and through. the opening track is one of the most annoying things I've heard all year.

dishonourable mention to Machinedrum - Human Energy. ffs. yeah it's good but I fucking hate it.

also, I just realised there was a new Sepalcure LP this year and I haven't even spent any time with it. damn.
