You want a Microfreak. The synth engines sound really good (if a little counterintuitive at times)and there's plenty of them, with regular updates. The touch sensitive keyboard is really nice too, it responds to poly aftertouch. Having said that, I sold mine not too long ago lol to fund an Analog 4.

Three years ago when you could find them for under $300 easily I'd say "Akai S-6000"

In the under $300 range I'd say "Wavestation SR" now.

Under $200, probably the Sonicware Liven XFM. I haven't used it but based on how good the 8bit Warps has been and the fact that it the XFM is polyphonic 4 op FM and should be more flexible because of that, it seems like a really good choice.

I don't know why you're bringing money into this, I'm talking about squid.

I'm sure I wrote about it elsewhere on here, but I reflect on my time with the micron with dark feelings. ymmv but it's less than the sum of its parts.

I'm just waiting for my next payday (tomorrow) so I can get one of these:

I prefer to have my one budget synth with a least a single oscillator but I’m liking the minimal design ?

I can totally concur on the Model:Cycles. You can write a complete tune with it. That's the downside of just getting a single synth like a Monologue (which is also a fantastic synth). I have to pack up all my gear in November and its getting shipped across the Atlantic home to the UK. The Cycles will definitely be coming in my luggage so I can have some gear while I'm in limbo.
