Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things (Remastered)

Recommended Posts

Squarepusher’s sonic masterpiece and debut mind-melter of an LP Feed Me Weird Things returns, reissued on double vinyl for the first time since its release on the 3rd of June 1996. Originally released on Rephlex, Aphex Twin himself noted on the sleeve notes of the original that Squarepusher makes “sound like sound never sounded before… Squarepusher gives us the SOUND of SOUND.” Now released on Warp 25 years later, the original album has been remastered from the original DATs and features two extra tracks on a 10 which were first released on the B-side of the Squarepusher Plays… EP and later featured on the original Japanese release of this album. The edition also includes a 16 page booklet with personal photographs, ephemera and notes from Tom Jenkinson, giving us an insight into his early career and into a time of true experimentation and innovation during the mid-90s.

To say it was ‘ahead of its time’ feels unsatisfactory, and almost chronologically inaccurate - the wild array of styles it blends makes Feed Me Weird Things seem to exist in a time and space continuum all of its own. Maybe there really were UFOs over Leytonstone?

Using the nascent energy and wildly experimental drum programming of jungle as its main rhythmic driving force, Feed Me Weird Things is celebrated for the way it was able to blend and cross-pollinate genres so effectively. Jazz, instrumental dub, trip-hop, UK hardcore, ambient synthesis, seventies cop funk and even a kind of mangled bossa nova are all tied magically together, transcending into a sound uniquely his own.

Without delving into the many highlights and moments on the record, it serves as both a snapshot of one of the most vital, experimental periods in the history of UK electronic music and how the young Tom Jenkinson was pushing the boundaries of electronic music, into something well and truly weird, feeding into the canon of electronic music that resonated on into that decade and beyond.

I’m wondering when Warp artists start their own bc, who ships the records, Warp / bleep, the artist, their partner / family / friends?

oh shit plays bsides are on the 10", that's actually great!  My copy of plays is barely listenable these days, I really treated my wax like shit as a young jit.

It's just Warp putting their Bleep store on an additional platform - all will still go through them

*sigh* it is looking more and more likely that every single album I've ever purchased throughout the course of my life will be re-released at some point, and I will hem and haw as to whether I should re-buy my entire collection or not. I think the powers that be must somehow know that all our old CD's from the '90s are either scratched to hell, or will possibly digitally disintegrate soon, thus a new opportunity for a sale exists. do I hold steadfast and revere the original? or appreciate the extra frequency tweaks and bonus accoutrements. *end sigh*

alas, there is a 99.9% chance I will end up buying this. I am not a cranky old dude, just merely observing this re-release phenomenon that occurs in our universe...thanks John

Bought this despite having OG and Squarepusher Plays. I'm quite stupid really.

I bought this too despite having a vinyl rip of both.
But who does not love the smell of fresh bandcamp flacs?
Anyhow fresh digital files always taste better to my ears because they still have all the bits.

Bought both the originals when they came out but will probably (definitely) grab the orange vinyl.

I grabbed it. My OG copies of fmwt and plays are both pretty tatty so will be nice to get mint versions.

Has anyone seen it available from other web shops? Bleep/Bandcamp doesn't subtract the local VAT, which means I'll be double-VATted.

It's easily top 5 album of his. Shits all over HND.

I wouldn’t say that, but I also prefer it to HND.

The clear vinyl version is already gone from Bandcamp, but there will be more - on Bleep. You know what to do.

Now, I was surprised not to find a thread for this since it has been around for a while, a full version is available in the ballacid channel.
However I know that a "remastered" version with fixed audio and better sync amongst other things was available on the channel
at the address youtu.be/gfc_xp113Oo until it was privated sometime during the last year.
I guess this thread is for discussing the vid but also for letting people know if the remastered version ever becomes available again..
