coax Posted May 13, 2022 Share Posted May 13, 2022 I'm a stickler for organization so I'm wondering what you consider the proper EP list. AFAIK there was a bit of confusion because EP7 is actually the 8th or 9th depending on if you count Basscad and/or Cavity Job. Personally I considered Anti the first proper EP and EP7 would then be the 7th EP, Cavity Job can be considered a single and Basscad isn't proper since it's remixes. But both cavity and basscad are included in the EPs 1991-2002 Boxset? I'm sure this has been talked about before but I haven't really given it that much thought until now when I'm organizing folders on disk. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Basscad,EP is literally called an EP so for me it counts. Plenty of artists have released EPs consisting of remixes. Regarding length, the way Autechre uses "EP" has never really had any relation to how the majority of the recording industry uses it. Subrange EP is what almost 60 minutes? A lot of other artists would release that as an album and be done with it. Then again lots of Autechre EPs were split across two 12"s with different catalog numbers and alternate album art, with an album length CD release. Anvil Vapre, almost 36 minutes. EP7, almost 70 minutes counting the hidden track not on vinyl. Not sure if this is sort of a "hey, we have our album out, our EP is a collection of alternate explorations of those ideas that stand on their own" or it could just be an IDM convention.. Aphex Twin's done this too Then again there's also their mail order EP either We R Are Why and Wap88, Autechre's remixes of Gescom, so you can add two more eps there to the list. coax Posted May 23, 2022 Author Share Posted May 23, 2022 I agree with everyone in their various posts but the reason this started is because I wanted to separate albums from ep's from remixes and so on in folder structure just because it feels nice to have this organization. I didn't use to organize this way but for some reason it's good now... It makes me wonder though have ae been trolling us a bit since the start with this and made it confusing a little on purpose. I think this is the case. Well, not necessarily that they're intentionally trolling, but that naturally their collections of music are falling into formats/structures outside of the standard single/ep/lp/2lp paradigm. Because it's always about the music first, and that includes the curation, sequencing and overall presentation of their releases. So the length, quality and unifying characteristics of that material goes with that. Trying to fit the ae catalogue into those standard boxes is always going to be a headache, because you need more boxes. This is basically how i think it is counted too cavity job is a single, basscad is an EP, and to make EP7 the 7th requires Peel Sessions to not be counted. while I agree it makes no sense to not count Peel Session, it seems consistent because to make Move of Ten be the 10th would also mean Peel Session 2 wasn’t counted either I’m not saying it makes sense and I agree it’s all likely part of a troll on the notion of what is an EP vs an LP In my mind cannon EP7 is much more than an EP, and I’d put it as one of my favorite albums. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
