to me this just sounds like new generation of shredders who listened to joe satriani and steve vai and some prog and frank zappa and other stuff.. 1 part scientology cocktail party music and 1 part music theory nerd

u my friend, are canceled! :nelson:

lols why? i love some zappa. i don't get why these people can't have a tinge of zappa in what they're doing.. it's just they are missing some of the other parts of zappa that make him whole.  same for some prog weirdness. i love some weirdness that's got some prog in it.. doesn't mean it can't all go horribly wrong by my tastes...

never heard of them. that Neurotica track is a bop, could hear that with some lame ass singer on it, but it's catchy. cheesy af too but that's fine.

other tracks are shit. is this djent? i can catch some djent influence here and there in the techniques, but really this is just YouTube/TikTok guitar showoffy prog crap except they put drums and keyboards under it.

oh ok zappa very good

polyphia (pedophilia) very bad

still weird to use them on the same thread though...

anyway, not gonna put my hands on fire but I'd not be surprised if zappa WASN'T a big influence on them...

yeah.. probably right.. to me it's way more joe satriani sounding and like music theory jazz prog nerdouts. they all have degrees from berkely college of music and out shred each other or something.

this. As a guitarist who also likes IDM drums although I recognize the technical skill, I was utterly unmoved by this. going to wade into sacrilege territory here but it's the same with Steve Vai. Incredible talent, but give me B.B. King slow, mournful heartbreak solos over 30 triplets per second with 0 soul any day of the week.

This popped across my feed the other day - incredibly technical, but, like... I dunno, you can feel the joy on the room:

Also, digging a little deeper, this dude.. kinda rules.

The Polyphia people may be virtuosos (and kudos to them for that) but in the end they’re playing the same, extremely bland chord progressions that are all over current pop music.

The two Japanese gentlemen @T3551ER links are much more adventurous (and therefore more fun to listen to).

yeah.. there's something lacking. i think lsd and weed and trauma would make their music more interesting.

Let's start with some basic compositional skills.

Zappa was sober as a nun. Some people just have bad aesthetic sense.

yes!

still, why do we (the ones who've been posting on this thread) all think that these dudes have bad aesthetic taste? do they though? their fans would say otherwise... is there such a thing?

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.”

No, I said their music was boring. And then I voiced the suspicion that unlike Japanese Guitar Squarepusher above they don’t really know how to compose music properly.

Which is fine, if they want to do pop music, where brain dead two chord dirges are de rigueur. Except that their displays of technical prowess rather retract from the poppiness. Which makes me wonder who the audience for this music actually is.

EDIT: and if you want pop with virtuoso stuff, just stick to Japanese Guitar Squarepusher (Ichika Nito, apparently):

EDIT 2: and he does djent-ish metal, too!
