I'd rather not release them until I have Richard's permission (since I don't want to get into any legal trouble with all this, as they ARE copyrighted tracks).

I guess now is a good time as any to reveal the story behind these tracks since enough time has passed since their coming into existence outside the Llanerlog Studios and ultimately, into my hands.

These tracks were hastily taped off of a DAT Richard had lying around in his house during a party (this was when Richard lived with several people, before the bank days), and Richard unfortunately had a bit too much and was asleep/unconscious, and one of the party goers decided to tape off one of his DATs to ironically, impress a girl!

Having pulled off such a feat, the reaction from the girl in question was unfortunately "not impressed" and the cassette sat in a drawer for several years, no one really knowing what it was until a mate of a mate happened across it, played it, and realized what it was (the Ventolin track probably helped). Fast forward to about 3 or 4 years ago, and a kind soul decided to bestow this upon me in the form of a MD - and I've sat on it all this time, only making mention of it in the past couple of years.

Keep in mind that this is just an MD of tracks - Richard probably has hundreds of these tapes, with ideas or completed songs he can revisit if the need arises (the tracks off the 2001 reissue of SOSW were just two tracks Richard pulled off DATs he had that were marked "Polygon Window" - no real thought went into choosing them, as WARP just wanted to make the reissue a bit more special for the fans.

Why bring it up now? Well, I always intended on including that in the eventual Aphex Discography on WATMM, but that's still progressing slowly, and really there's no reason to sit upon it any longer, and as I've mentioned before, Richard himself is aware of my possessing it, and at one time had given me permission to release several tracks (this was at the time the company hosting WATMM decided to go tits up and take the money and run). I lost the PM's detailing what was OK and what wasn't, and I hope that some form of OK is given, as I don't want to just release this stuff - I do respect the copyright these tracks have on them, but by the same token I do want everyone to hear them as some of the tracks are very good, I think.

This has nothing to do with publicity for WATMM, as I haven't created a thread about these tracks, nor announced them to the world, etc., so any naysayers can end that line of thinking.

I have gotten an offer to digitally clean these up, as I would like to hear them in the best quality possible.

Thanks Joyrex for deciding to 'drop' the back story on this. It's nice to know the girl wasn't impressed enough to matter, otherwise she may have ended up with the only copy and then it may have never made it into ANYONE'S hand at all...

so what should this album be named?

Llanerlog Bubblebath

From/Boy-To/Girl EP (as it was only made to impress a Girl)

Selected Girl Works 90-94 (only guessing on the years of course)

I'm just calling it 'Llanerlog Compilation' as it is a set of randomly chosen tracks taken from the Llanerlog Studio sessions (I assume they all were?)

QUOTE from Joyrex - "since their coming into existence outside the Llanerlog Studios" does that mean created at Llanerlog or elsewhere?

hey Joyrex, why don't you add a section to the site where you write stories about your encounters with afx, etc.? it would be very educational and fun at the same time!

It'd be a short section - I've only had a few...

Also, I don't think these tracks should be called anything other than "unreleased tracks", as that's what they are - a collection of basically random tracks. Remember, these are straight off a DAT - Richard might have let years elapse between when one track was put on there, or simply was backing up his most recent output at the time. I have no idea what organizational structure his backups have other than his mention of labeling tapes by what alias they best fit under.

No, this is not CAT023 (although I guess one could go and listen to the tracks and see if any of them match Mike P's description of the tracks from CAT023... they do come from around the correct time period).

No, this is not CAT023 (although I guess one could go and listen to the tracks and see if any of them match Mike P's description of the tracks from CAT023... they do come from around the correct time period).

Mike Paradinas description:

It was an email which was sent to me (in Joyrex) about an album "CAT023" of Caustic Window [... ]. What follows is the description of the album by Bowgie, because it is one of four people who have this album. It was known as that Bowgie is really µ-ziq (alias Michael Paradinas). This was not confirmed [... ]. "There are No titles: Untitled.

Side A - Label : CAUSTIC WINDOW LP 33 1/3 SIDE A REPHLEX Run-out groove : CAT 023-A1 A PORKY PRIME CUT Side B - Label : CAUSTIC WINDOW LP 33 1/3 SIDE B REPHLEX Run-out groove : CAT 023-L1 A PORKY PRIME CUT Side C - Label : CW LP side C Run-out groove : THIRD REICH VETERANS WILL NOT JOIN VICTORY WAR PARADE. CAT 023 -01 Side D - Label : CAUSTIC WINDOW LP side D Run-out groove : CAT 023 - G1 A PORKY PRIME CUT

It has hand written labels by RDJ (Richard D. James):

SIDE 1 in black marker pen: "CAUSTIC WINDOW LP 33 1/3 SIDE A REPHLEX" in the run out groove: "CAT 023-A1 A PORKY PRIME CUT": There are two tracks on side A,

the first is a subtle melodic grower, with hi q's; pianoish DX sounds & woodwind type synths. nice but not very immediate.

Track 2 is *much* more like it: Industrial type drums straight out of J5 and the catchiest afx acid line (not 303). Builds and builds with pad sounds & percessive held chords in a spooky fashion.

SIDE 2 Same hand written info except it says: "SIDE B" in black marker pen and in the run out groove it's the same but says side "L" 5 Tracks on B:

Track 1) called "muttley" by Richard. It features samples from "dastardly & Muttley" (Wacky Races Cartoon) starting off with Dastardly shouting "Muttley!" then Muttley the dog going "RashingFrashingWrarraFrarraWrash". Other samples: A girl speaking: "You know I don't even know why you bother talking" and the track ends with "what an utterly fantastical journey" (unknown sample) As regards to the music, it starts with a monophonic synth line doing a percussive riff up 4 notes, joined by another sound a few bars later. Then the drums kick in. Bass and snare from Phloam, sort of metallic guiro and clangs from Schottkey. Halfway through an orchestral string chords sample comes in, and the girl speaking sample appears. It's a great track, very SAW85-92 in period.

Track 2) Happy, jolly little track with high pitched bell-like hihats acid sounds and long square wave bass note. Random dat glitches spice up the percussion. The melody comes from the interplay of tuned bass drum & tuned metal hihats.

Track 3) Wow! This is a treat for fans of SOSW. Starts with Roland R8 hihats, then a marimba melody & the BD Kikkz in with an acidicish line. marimba fades in again. Then a BB1 DX pad in 5ths (lots of reverb) makes it fuckin lush. Drum break then the track restarts with stabs from Audax powder, then acid & marimba. Track ends wth drums.

Track 4) My favourite: Noisey drum loops (Tuned white noise?) acid pokes. Bass drum from Hedphelym or the B-sides to ABB2. Also odd bell like High melodies & metallic sampled melodies! very odd track.

Track 5) Tribal bongos, Quoth Bd kik & "a,aphex-a,aphex"samples. About 1 min. long.

SIDE 3 Handwritten on label: "CW LP side C" and in the run out groove it says; "THIRD REICH VETERANS WILL NOT JOIN VICTORY WAR PARADE. CAT 023 -01" 4 tracks

Track 1) Very simple synth melody & 4/4 kik drum / snare joined later by emotional sounding soft detuned string notes. Hihats and hi Q's join later and lo-bandwidth metallic samples.

Track 2) A very early track. One of the 1st he did. Childish squeaky acid line. Crap piano riff. Redeemed by lush strings & reverb on certain drum sounds, which might have indicated Here was a future talent.

Track 3) Square wave bassline, melodic held acid line, R8 drums. Simple lovely very Aphex.

Track 4) Jazz fusion aphex! Drum sounds similar to Gak. Sounds like Gak in fact except for a low farting bass and muted jazzy piano riff & overlaid solos.

SIDE 4 "CAUSTIC WINDOW LP . side D" handwritten in black on label in runout groove: "CAT 023 - G1 A PORKY PRIME CUT " 5 tracks

Track 1) An ambient track. This was a reject from SAW85-92 and is unspeakably lovely. A monophonic synth weaves around soft flutes to devastating effect. The synth filter opens & closes to emphasise the riff at certain times, & the flute goes freestyle towards the end. Metallic percussion invades the song at times complementing the groovy momentum gathered by the main riff.

Track 2) This is Phlaps off the criminal justice bill comp.

Track 3) This is Cunt off TEX 3

Track 4) This is a phone call between Mixmaster Morris & Scanner. Richard got 2 phones, rang them both (one to Morris, one to Scanner) and luckily they both answered simultaneously. What follows is very funny. Both Morris & Robin think each other has initiated the call and confusion reigns. This increases as a third voice enters the fray (RDJ). Eventually they recognise him as Richard: "If you put the phone down your gonna die.. "

Track 5) Same trick between Chris Jeffs (Cylob) & Michael Paradinas. This time Cylob figures it out straight away but the funniest bit is where he says "I think Richard wants us to talk to each other", to which Michael replies "Oh great..." track (& album) ends.

You can post this info on the joyrex site [...] or wherever. I promised Richard not to let anyone have copies. I stick to that. »
