i've often wondered what exactly he does to crank out these superdj sets, such as the recent melt festival. judging by that picture with the wheelchair guys he seems to have a laptop and a table full of gear, i didn't notice any turntables or anything.

my guess is that he has a mostly pre-fabbed set on the laptop and as hte set goes on he can turn to the equipment present and filter various things, maybe add in some drops/kills, layer in some other stuff, etc... but i wouldn't suspect him to be intensively beatmatching some of his uptempo stuff into a jungle track, or even the hiphoptrack into alberto balsalm or whatever it would be... i mean i know he can do it, as i think i've got proper turntable DJ sets by him (the 1994 set from chicago when he toured with bjork comes to mind) but i think the laptop/audiotools are used to make the backbone of these sets where he tears through a pretty impressive spectrum of music with all kinds of comptuerized/DSPish extras, like the record scratch/backspin sounds from some sets like primavera or snowbombing.

i've had one chance to see aphex, the 1997 US tour in chicago, which basically was just a pre-fabbed laptop/mp3 set, as i had the realaudio of hte big day out set from months earlier and the heliospan remix was note for note beat for beat hte exact same one.. altho at the show it was just the couch, the man, the laptop, and the weird mostly-wireframe box with the aphex A logo sticker on it that had about 3 or 4 wires notably protruding from it, but i think that was just a sproper sideshow. beyond that tho, i'm going off of the communitah and stories here and there, so i am properly ignorant in this arena...

so does anyone who lives in a continent that has the sporadic rdj live gigs have a proper idea of the method behind the madness here?

Winamp to play mp3s. Media player to play porn clips. Special AFX program to beat match mp3 to rythmic thrusting in porn clip.

And kleenex just in case.

I'm pretty sure he uses Traktor software, as to what sort of controller and fx it's a mystery to me

It's clearly not "prefabbed" in terms of he hasn't put the set together previously. Maybe the track order but in many of his live sets you can hear little mistakes - in the Traffic festival set one moment springs to mind where he mixes out of "Cardboard Lamb" by Crash Course In Science into that totally awesome unreleased track. He brings it in totally out of sync, gets rid of it and mixes it in correctly.

Why can't you spell "the" properly? It's T-H-E.

Can work quite well though!

if was very close to him as he played live in berlin with satanstornade

he does use the 2 turntabels in front of him - he also had 15-20 records with him and he did play them.

at melt there were also the 2 turntabels (i saw it cause i was only having 2 rows of people in front of me) and the laptop but i am not sure if he made use of it cause the video show was kind of too much in sync with the music like it was at the cunningham gig in spain - here he could have used a vj setup instead of only djing meaning he mixed the videos. there is a hardware that can do that - you dj like you normaly do but the files are videos

maybe the set itself is very much planed with some "free djing" parts

laptop -> Traktor -> mixer. he uses an external soundcard which has pretty big red leads.
