their pre-tired sounds records are brilliant too... if you don't like the vague modern classical feel that those two have i'd still really recommend the ballasted orchestra and avec laudenum. avec laudenum in particular is like tired sounds and refinement with all the more standard instrumentation taken out. perfect balance between simplicity and interest i think.

cant think of much law saw85-92 though... that's definitely what sets that record apart - it sounds like it just came into being by itself. no ego, no clutter.

fear that's the case. never found anything in the 90's that matched it, and RDJ never released anything that directly felt as though it came from quite the same place... aside from the odd remix and parts of polygon window.

always felt it showed signs of house and techno, particularly the piano stuff (italian house?), which, in a much more commercial form, was an influence on very commercial dance acts of the 90's too. 80's house seems largely lost, aside from the few artists i know that still maintain a career and reputation that started around that time, so i don't know what RDJ's influences could have been there - model 500?

my biggest fear is that "ambient" means, to many (perhaps moreso now than ever, especially since time is rewriting where certain artists are categorised) something to be played in the background, something that doesn't require attention or structure. it just needs to drift. also think there's a dreaded "music to smoke dope to" element in how electronic stuff is interpreted, and i've always steered more towards things that create an atmosphere, encourage a journey in the mind of the listener, demands attention and respect, yet doesn't involve brutal beat usage as acid / d 'n' b edge of intelligent non-commercial electronic music would do. dont know where this stuff is nowadays though.

i'm still interested in the idea of modern classical - i really like warren ellis / nick caves "jesse james" soundtrack, which is chamber music, i hear, and the OST to 'let the right one in' is also superb - but i think SAW 85-92 and the intelligence of the earlier orbital, 808 state stuff i used to listed to avidly in the early 90's is something which must have origins and subsequent influences that can be found somewhere, somehow... dubstep might have been it, if it didn't sound so much more like middleclass white kids that electronica ever managed to 20 years ago.

nice, i've been meaning to pick this up as well. sounds a bit too much like a movie score at times, but there are some standout tracks.

the other day i just got the fearless four "problems of the world" 12 inch record. oh and i got a treacherous three record too, but i forget it's name. it's an old one from 1981 with a very nice instrumental which is fun to scratch/beatjuggle with.
