Messing around

got time to kill? try screwing around with an Aphex track in various ways.

feel free to list any ideas you have.

-Put the Speed and Tempo up by +100% and lower the pitch 12 steps.

sounds the same, but more like a shoddy, badly cut-up remix. like the sound is creasing and folding over itself.

-Change the speed

better yet, change it to the alternate speed it's supposed to be played at.

if it's a 45rpm track, change it to 33rpm. and Vice versa. Mount St Michel sounds amazing at 33rpm.

-Listen to it backwards.

sounds like a completely different song, but almost similar.

(try it with Come to Daddy. "I want your soul!" changes to "Your soul is nearly out!")

Saw this a while back....

- Split the stereo track into two tracks and put the right or left track about 0.2 seconds ahead.

-Listen to it backwards.

sounds like a completely different song, but almost similar.

(try it with Come to Daddy. "I want your soul!" changes to "Your soul is nearly out!")

Everyone was surprised when I posted this... supposedly it was actually unknown when I assumed it would be b7. That is awesome though - I remember Richard saying something about death metal and Come to Daddy, that's the only reason I tried it.

How do you do that stuff, what program do you use?

get some really shit freeware dj thing and play the same tune on each deck with one ever ever so slightly out on the timeframe. sounds beefy.

or messy, depending on your perspective

argh. don't play Jelly Fish at a really high pitch.

you know the bit where the really high pitched tone comes along for a few seconds?

yeah, that kills your ear at an even higher pitch. damn...

- play tamphex (hedphuq mix) to your Gran

- write "aphex twin is in a bin" on a piece of wood and throw it at your Dad

- listen to ktpa pt.1 upside down

- listen to ktpa pt.2 diagonally

- burn everything you own whilst listening to Funny Little Man

- electrocute yourself to Windowlicker

- varnish your face

ok, so. i have:

- a paia fatman modded to accept audio input to the vcf (midi triggered)

- an ms2000 w/ audio input (midi trigger or arpeggiator)

- an mpc1000 i can use to continuously emit midi triggers and 2 midi outs

- a mixer with built in delay/reverb + 2 additional sends (triggered by knobs in my fingers, toes, and gaping maw. and faders.).

i leave all that going while listening to aphex twin, or music in general. when the urge hits, i mash my grubby mitts all over the controls of the above listed items, and the noise warps and flexes in interesting ways.

i like to do this at 5 am. i live in a concrete sarcophagus, and can get away with such things.

speed up nannou 2 and suddenly it becomes a cheerful jig-starter, rather than a sentimental ballad. pretty neat effect

i got another one.

Split the stereo track and then reverse one of the tracks.

so you've got the same track but one reversed.

works best with melody-heavy tracks.

e.g. most of SAW II and Fingerbib.

give it a go,sounds great.

0.15x the original speed and try to guess what sound you're listening too.

(this is actually the worst thing you can ever do to an aphex track)

leave sawv2 cd out in the sun covered in beer, musics side up

VOILA! new oval album!

Tnahpele Song

Reversing that song actually brings out the ambient-like sound that underlays the hard beats.
