if you want to save a created instrument(drumkitmap in your case), you'll have to click on disk browser, click on "instrument"(underneath DSP Chain), and then save.

no it isn't. why's it VST/VSTi compatible then? for a laugh? it's just a sequencer and you can use it how you like. the reason I said not to use sampled pads is that i believe a pad from a VSTi will sound better and (if you make your own patch) is much more original. i've used Renoise loads of times with the Phoscyon, Arturia VSTi's etc and it works totally fine. you just click on the VSTi instead of the sample you want to use and you can program the notes in like anything else...

why wouldn't you want to use VSTi's??

and (to tht! tne), you can get a good load of free VSTi's from the sticky thread at the top of the EKT General Discussion forum (this very one in fact). Called Mosca's free plugins list. You can also find innumerable torrents if you just search for "VSTi". I recommend anything by Arturia. Especially the MiniMoog. It fucking rocks.

yeah, that's exactly what you're meant to do - why didn't it work? did you get no sound or what? You should be able to have loads of tracks playing at once depending on your computer's spec. At least 64 tracks though...

and Velns and MRX, I know what you're saying and yes, trackers were initially designed to be used with just samples and are maybe better suited to this, but I see no point in not using VST's if a program can handle them. Especially for sounds like pads....

i had been working with the electro

drumkit and then i selected the steel

guitar for track 4 and now all 4 tracks

produce their sounds as that instrument.

maybe i could figure a way to save the

first 3 tracks in the song and then do a

next track with the melody indstrument.

Dunno about that, but i've stopped using VSTis a couple years ago and haven't looked back. I guess you just don't have a deadly collection of samples(or sources that you can sample). to each his own i guess

aaaaahhh,

right, what you need to do is:

look where your instruments are and by the left hand side of them, they will have a number 00, 01, 02 etc (in your case, there's probably just one instrument - located in the box in the top right hand corner of the screen).

so. click on the 00 space and load in an instrument, click in the desired track and add the notation. now click BELOW the 00 - where the instrument you've just loaded is - into the 01 space and add another instrument. click on another track and add the notation. now click on the 02 space below that one and add another instrument etc etc...

if you forget to click out of the currently selected instrument then load in a new one it will just change whatever you've put in to what you've changed it to which is what has happened to you.

also, i wouldn't bother with the drum kits (well, maybe just to get the hang of things, but steer clear once you know what you're doing). just get a load of single drum hit samples (yes SAMPLES) - 909 bass kicks, 808 cowbell, 606 snares etc (get fucking loads) and load these in as instruments and create drum patterns with them using 3 or 4 different tracks. eg - kick sequence in track 00, snare sequence in track 01, hi-hats in track 02 etc....

much more original patterns and ideas are made in this way.

here are a load of drum hit samples (just click on each different machine and download the sample pack).

safe.

Check out the breaks thread, Producer Sanfu posted links to a ton of them (be wanred, they are actually in mp3 format even though they say .wav, so you have to convert them back to wav before using in Renoise)

on the subject of samples, pads

something that's occasionally interesting is taking a sample, of any sort, and then going through it in sample editor with loop points to find a nice little tonal(?) loop (few milliseconds will do). trim the excess around the loop selection, then in the instrument editor apply appropriate ADSR envelope, maybe a subtle pitch LFO, lp/bp/hp filter, etc.

you can more than get by on samples alone and create some interesting instruments.

no need to deprive yourself of VSTi's though

Agreed again. This is really trackers delight type stuff! lol People with their boring DAWs don't understand, this is how we dooze it 1992 style. Well, later on for the envelopes bit. 1994 I guess? Whenever Impulse Tracker came around.
