Let's talk about Cichlisuite

Was listening to this at work today and thought "Fuck me this is brilliant", there isn't a weak track on this release. Pencha is amazing especially.

Also, the case says 'Mechanically Reclaimed by Autechre', I'm curious, does this mean the tracks are remixes of earlier stuff? Specifically Tilapia which has that Cichli sounding synth.

Also, talk about how wicked this EP is.

the album is a quasi remix album based on the track Chichli from Chiastic Slide.

although to my ears it sounds like totally new work just like most of Ae's remix work.

nah. mechanically reclaimed is only for the cd version, i think. it means the two eps (.1 and .2) are combined.

i'm sure you're confusing EP7 here?

no, it consisted of two parts.

edit; but these also say it's mechanically reclaimed. it probably is about that they're remixes of chichli as GB lll said

Sadly, I am without this release. Can never find it. But Tilapia from the Vancouver download is amazing. How different is the album version? Cause all I recognize from Cichli is the synth sound. Thats some remixing job if its just Cichli remixed. But i once read in an interview that Autechre's early remixes were so cut up that the original song was unrecognizalbe. Rob or maybe Sean said "and thats when we decided just to make our own music, because we just stopped using the other songs". Or something to that fashion.

Cichli Suite is sickly sweet! I've never heard the EP. I should download it...

its says "mechanically reclaimed" on the 12" pair of records, not just the cd, so yes, i think it is saying that they are remixes, or at least sourced from other stuff.

tilapia is a brilliant track.

plus the artwork is really beautiful i think.

i was reading a book a while ago on fish and noticed that all of the track names on this are fish-related too... which was nice.

Yeah, Cichlid is a type of family of fish, hence the theme

I think when they said that they meant early stuff as in pre-Autechre stuff. I could be wrong, but if you listen to Lego Feet it kinda indicates that sort of sound in places.

Fucking awesome this EP is. On the whole I think Ae did (does?) some of their best work in short form - Garbage, Anvil Vapre, the 1st Peel Session & Envane are personal favorites too. It's also interesting how well these EPs "connect the dots" between their full-length albums.

very true... autechre used to do a release year with an album, and a double 12" ep, and the 2 formats always related to each other. like say, tri repetae/anvil vapre, chiastic slide/envane, lp5/cichli suite.....

they dont seem to do this style of release anymore which is a shame.

i love these tracks.. i went to outback for a company dinner and had tilapia (which was positively delicious, i'd thought it would be bland) and then drove home listening to cichlisuite.. the climax in tilapia gets me every time.

i love the way ae will fuck about with source material like this, almost like a jazz musician would. although i can hear very little source material in there it sorta warms my electronic music wang to know that it is in there somewhere.
