Is there a VST that can make this classic alien sound?

I could of course buy a Theremin but they're damn expensive!

unfortunately, most of the Thermin "sound" is in how its controlled. The actual tone generator is just a basic analogue oscillator.

Try getting an analogue synth vst, switching to monophonic, turning off all but one oscillator, and setting that to a basic waveform like triangle or square. then add some sine or triangle wave vibrato with the LFO. Mix in a little bit of "randomness" if you can, or else assign the depth to your pitch wheel (at a low range), or a knob for performance tweakage.

to get the legato vibe, play with sloow portamento, ot try to tweak the pitch wheel as you play. assign the master velocity to the mod wheel or an expression pedal so you can surf both parameters while you play

add plenty of low fi delay/tape echo

There's a theremin-esque VST I've used with an X-Y controller that you can drag about with your mouse to make typical WoooEOEOEOEOeeoeoeoOOOOO noises... I think it was called Mysteron, I'll look for a link...

Yep! Here you go: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/26.html

Enjoy!
