Radiohead - In Rainbows

a pretty big meh, for sure. and it didn't help that i'd heard eight of the tracks like 20 months ago, as think i said before.

anyway i listened to it all the way through three times today, it improved slightly, especially the first four tracks; but 5, 6, 8, 9 are still pretty weak. and i like the 'nigel's basement' version of videotape way more than the album version

much better after numerous listens. Still really only care for the first four songs. Although I totally agree with whoever commented on the endings. Some of the endings sound too abrupt and unfinished.

One of the too few great albums I heard recently.. Reckoner is da bomb and Weird Fishes/Arpeggi is an absolute hook. Radiohead's sound, as odd as it may seem, matured on tracks like All I Need and House Of Cards (what a great track..!). Or is it Thom's voice?

Where might I hear this amazing alternate version of Videotape? I've only listened to the album once and Videotape was about the only song I really liked... so if there's a better version I'd like to hear it

It's on a compilation album, called 'Down In The Basement' or something like that, basically Thom does this one-take play of Videotape - just him and a piano, it's so good.

For some reason on the album version they decided to cut about half of the song away, replacing some of the really good piano work and lyrics with out-of-time sounds and a crappy drum beat.

I watched the videos of Videotape live at the basement, which was pretty nice... but yeah... the version with guitar and stuff is pretty sweet... woulda been nice to hear what they would have done with that in the studio.

I listened to the whole album again... I still found it a bit boring... I've never struggled to get through such a short album before. But it's far from bad... I'm not really dissappointed cos I didn't like HTTT all that much and I NEVER listen to Amnesiac... so I can't say I was expecting much.

Videotape is still my favourite, I've listened to that a few times by itself... and All I Need is really cool too. There's a few bits in songs that I like... there's a really pretty bit near the end of Bodysnatchers which gets me everytime... and the end of Reckoner I think was cool... the beginning of Nude and 15 Step...

Yeah... don't really know what I'm still typing for... just rambling. Murmurmurmurmurmurmur....

Murmurmurmurmurmurmur....

Ive still only listened to the album once, as im not really the type to listen to things over and over and i thought it was brilliant. I have to agree about videotape though, ive heard that song a couple of times before and im sure its been done much better. That song had huuuuge potential.

I'm just becoming more in love with the album the more I listen to it.

I think there is a big similarity between Motion Picture Soundtrack and Videotape; both about death/afterlife, both have a sort of bittersweet final lyric to end the album with

i keep thinking of an extremely gay analogy that probably only wattem would understand;

in rainbows is to radiohead what the campfire headphase is to boc, if we say that ok computer is like mhtrtc (generally the most popular and influential album), kid a is like geogaddi (darker, more experimental, somewhat less popular, but equally good), and then if we skip over amnesiac/httt: the campfire headphase and in rainbows both came after too long of a wait; both are slightly random in their tracklisting and don't flow like proper albums; both have a weak handful of tracks just before the end; both don't really break any new ground for the band; and yet both have a few really really good tracks that make the album worth buying

yeah not sure what you're talking about ... it's a random collection of tracks written over the last 2-10 years, the album doesn't flow very well at all

i dont see how it matters when they were written, it doesnt mean they were selected randomly. i think the tracks have a congruent sound in the way theyve been recorded, they style of the guitar etc... unlike Kid A which had fully electronic tracks, out of tune brass bands, and an ambient track all thrown in together

Odd, I think Kid A flows much better than this. The sudden abrupt endings on a few tracks are enough to make is seem at least slightly awkward.

I also think it sounds like a bunch of b-sides slapped together... I don't think it's cos some of them are older, cos most of them are quite new aren't they? It's just the order they're in and the fact that they fizzle out or end abruptly I think... maybe.. I dunno

Wow a lot of people knocking this album.

I admit, there seems to be no change of sound or surprises, or any sign of innovation so to speak, but I'm fine with that, because I was not a huge radiohead fan before this album anyway so there is no loss on my part. I never followed up after each album. However, the tracks that really stand out for me are All I Need (that bass is brilliant), Bodysnatchers (the guitar part between 2.06 and 2.53 is excellent) and Reckoner (I just love the way Thom hit's those really high notes, and the violins that come into play). All in all, a very good album and definitely haven't wasted any time listening.

well i'm liking it more and more each time, discovering new things with each listen. that's so radiohead.

thoms singing is the best of his career. really , his voice sounds great on this one. but it doesn't like blow my mind or anything.

it's nice.

after a few listens i think the album really picks up with 'nude'. the first two tracks are boring and don't fit the rest of the songs at all. after nude i like it up until videotape which is really boring, like a pyramid song b-side. just watching the basement version of it and its not much better, just not a very interesting song. my favorite tracks so far are 'nude', the one with the falsetto and 'all i need'.

good album not great. a little short. i'm hoping they put the great in the extra disc.
