Arctic Synths

I want to use those synth sounds that sound like they are from the Antarctica. They are usually nice soft pads with that "tinkle" (no that's a bad word for it) in it, and are the presets are usually called "arctic chill", or "ice pad" or something. Presets would be acceptable, but I'd like to know how to make it myself.

 

What's that artist that uses these all the time?

The DX7 has a pretty glassy tone, and the fm synthesis can get some interesting twinkly artifacts going on in the mix.

 

NI's Pro 53 has a preset called 'Ice Flowers' that is a kind of hi pass filtered evolving pad sound.

 

You're probably better sticking with digital synths if you want the cold, clinical sound, as analogue has a tendency to be more warm and organic sounding.

 

To be honest you can get this sound with pretty much any synth you want you just have to be vaguely familiar with basic concepts of synthesis. Lots of reverb helps as well.

use the presets to see how they're made, like, look at them
