this is kind of exciting, i don't have a subscription to anything else so this will be a treat getting a non-bill mail.

tape op is my favorite magazine of all time. pretty much the only magazine i actually like.

it's based in production, not just indie rock/guitar based stuff, any kind of music (there is more music production out there than electronic music of course). i have seen interviews with people who did everything in custom max/msp patches, and people who collect moog synths and other analog modulars, they have a lot of electronic music production stuff. they just also have like, dudes who engineered led zeppelin albums and other things. which i find interesting.

it more covers mics and neves and shit, i'm really a synth and software guy... but usually worth leafing through.

got my first issue yesterday. some really nice stuff about mic placement and a reprint of an old interview with shadow from around the first unkle album. and the gear reviews are ace.

this mag is hilarious, especially the gear reviews in the back. every single review is over-the-top positive, written by some all-american dudes hyperbolically drooling over billionaire high end gear, not hampered by any technical knowledge whatsoever.

like when they praised some 1500$ passive EQ's sound by saying how great it sounds when you boost frequencies (while ofcourse passive EQs can't boost anything):

"when you boost, you're actually un-cutting a frequency range, instead of boosting it in the strict sense of the word. think about it for a minute. this gotta be a good thing sonically." then going on to say that it is one of the best EQs they know.

on a 3000$ neve channel strip, the conclusion was, "the unit never started to sound shit at any stage that i was messing with it, i loved this aspect of it." whatever that's supposed to mean..but yeah this is too amusing to use as toilet paper.

there was a catch to do with signing you up to marketing or something. maybe it was just to have the right to sign you up. i didnt like the idea of that.

years ago i bought a sampler from a shop called funky junk. recently they signed me up to this tapeop subscription without my permission.

im sure there are a lot of articles of people obsessed with pre-amps and compressors keke

i've got the tape op book, i think you can find it on amazong. it's not bad
