I'm sure this has been done before but hey it crossed my mind and its a slow ass friday so why not.

I'd keep it pretty simple and ask something I've always wanted to know. What software did he use to compose/produce Mt. St. Michaels off Drukqs. I'm not concerned with samples or sounds, I just want to know how he assembled it. We know he worked on it on his laptop while on vacation, and considering the time period it can't be that beefy of a machine compared to today's standards. I've always been curious because that track has so many tiny details it just blows my mind to think about. If I had to guess I'd say some kind of tracker but the sample length alteration, gating and other wild effects leave me wondering.

I'm in that camp too, sounds like tracked music at a very high ticks per beat rate. As far as the gating goes, gating like that is uber easy in a tracker. Just set it you an insane ticks per beat rate and alternate the volume channel between on and off. Flavor to taste. Done.

Engaging in wild speculation, I know Aphex was aware of what Aaron Funk (vsnares) was doing around that time with trackers. Vsnares was putting out some pretty mental stuff in those days, (printf "shiver" and making orange things) remember Aphex DJ'ed "unborn baby" at Sonar 2001 and some other stuff in Rome 2002. Wouldn't surprise me if he experimented with that toolset to see what could be done with it. Also remember reading how some tracks on Drukqs were just composed on a laptop while traveling, which would fit a tracker perfectly.
