Unofficial video for plyPhon

Last week I finished and published on the web an unofficial video for plyPhon, song taken from last Autechre release

The video is deeply synchronized with music and any visual element is connected to a sound event. In fact, beside the video impact, you can consider it as some kind of virtual score. This is a kind of visual language I like very much and I would like to explore in future works

Watch the hq version at Youtube

Any comment greatly appreciated

Great idea and superbly executed, definitely the best fan video I have ever seen for them. I liked the theme a lot, really fit the pounding beat of the song.

The only thing I wasn't sure about were the bright visuals that were sometimes in the background, I kind of preferred the contrast against stark black. Was that related to a particular element of the song?

Really fantastic job though, this obviously will draw comparisons to the Gantz Graf video, but it's a fitting homage and you have brought your own style to it. Nice work!

Fucking awesome! Hopefully WARP might catch wind of this and somehow make this the "official" video...it is well worth it.

Very nice man. Great work.

If you have some portfolio online with other works I'd love to see it.

How is this done exactly? Are some visual elements actually linked to audio or is it all 'handpolished'?

Easily the best Autechre fan video out there, perhaps even the best video overall. It resembles Gantz Graf in a lot of ways, but that's okay. I'm not convinced that quickly by video to music that's already strong in itself, but this rocks man.

The line waves remind me of the anime Mushi-shi for some reason by the way

Thank you, I'm starting my work right now as a graphic designer, animator and director, I've recently got my degree in architecture and I'm also a composer, studying in conservatory. So I'm very interested about the possibilities given by the deep union of images and music. You can have a look on a provisory portfolio here

About comparisons with Gantz Graf, I really don't know what to say. Gantz Graf is an amazing audiovisual experience, it's 6 years old now and can't be compared with anything else. I think it's the most stunning piece of video I've ever seen and I truly love Rutterford, it's probably my favourite director and all his work are bloody good, very inspiring to me. However I would gladly avoid a comparison: the only thing I can say is that this video is a work that follows a different direction, despite the possible resemblances.

About the video, no automated work at all. Everything is modeled, animated and synchronized by hand, frame by frame, using ears for sound reverse engineering. A true pain in the ass but I'm happy within the final result, I don't know if it could be officialized or not, just trying to work at my best. I gladly dedicate it to Autechre

just adding my appreciation to this thread. It's an excellent vid. The moment it really clicks for me is when there's a complete, sudden stop in the music and visuals. Good interpretation. The 'bolts' are nice too, but I wish I could see a better quality version (I think the sound quality in even the quicktime is a little flat).

Absolutely amazing. I am just speechless.

I have some questions regarding what you used to animate and make this video. I myself am studying film more specifically sound and video editing... but really want to move into learning how to make things like this. I am learning Adobe After Effects at the moment but my guess is you used something similar to Maya.

I seriously envy you, and any information regarding the school you attended and the amount of time it took to learn and make something like this would be greatly appreciative.

Feel free to email me at bsinnott@mac.com, I'd love to open up a dialogue.

Thanks for sharing and as someone else said... excellent track selection... also my favorite track on their new album.

This is amazing! The background lighting up in sync with the reverbed melody is a great choice, and everything else for that matter.

What a wonderful interpretation, loved it all the way through. 10/10 no doubt.

Cool, a lot of nice stuff on your site. The abstract works are great.

I think comparing it with Gantz Graf is inevitable, just because of the quality of the work and the excellent use of 3D animation. It's not the colours or forms necessarily (although it's also a lot of grey) but the perfect syncing and fast camera view switching. There's just no other 3D video around that's this good and Gantz Graf has been one of the only music videos I actually really like. But it's definetely a different direction, you're right.

Keep us updated with new stuff heh ;)
