Im thinking about getting one, i have a microkorg at the minute and im not the happiest with it to be honest, any other synths that will do the job of the sh101 for a better price?

also anyone got any ideas on synths with nice warm electronic music sounding pads and soft leads?

SH101 is a monosynth - hard to get good pads out of those, really!

Have a look for an Oberheim Matrix 1000. Probably the best value analogue out there at the moment. RUMOURED to be the main synth used on SAWII which will give you an idea of the pad sounds. Soft, warm and deep are its strengths, but it can also bring some crazy filter action with itys zillions of modulation options.

Matrix 6 and 6R are the same synth engine with keys (6), double the rackspace (6R) and way fewer memory locations.

You should be able to find one for less than an SH101 will cost you

was it not mostly the yamaha cs-5 that he etched the credits into? i've never heard it said it was a matrix 1000.

well, that's also a monosynth... plus he sold it...

as for the oberheim, who knows really with internet. it can certainly do SAWII sounds, tho most of that record's character comes from being recorded to tape thru a funky old reverb

seems plaid definitely use one tho..

Handley relies on a Roland MKS-80 and an Oberheim Matrix 1000 that he's had since the Black Dog days for the lush animal sounds Plaid seem to love. \

yeh it was a cs-5, and the Oberheim Matrix 1000 has too less knobs for Rich to enjoy using this :P And besides, didn't he already chuck out most of his gear out because he replaced it with his own homebuild stuff? Or was that later on..

the yamaha cs-5 looks really good, how does this compare to a roland sh 101? cos they are def cheaper on ebay.

i want a nice analogue synth that i can get acid basslines out of, but i also need a synth for some nice warm pads. so i need the best of both worlds on a budget.

again, you really need a POLYsynth for pads, not a monosynth

this is a true fact.

but you can made pads from a monosynth..just sounds well thin unless you have some lush reverb.

tomorrow I'll do a pad song with just a sh-101.. and see what you think....

but for proper lush pads.. i have an esq-1 which is more lush for pads then for acid baselines.. the esq1 is brilliant for 80's Miami vice bass sounds.. or dx7 sounds but having its own esq1 character!

yea, but it's a pain in the ass to record individual notes!

I feel like you can get some amazing stuff by layering (overdubbing) long notes on on the SH-101.

I'm thinking sounds like the chorus on Journey to Reedham

Also, you can just wait around for a cheap Juno... half the patches I end up with sound like they're from Amber, and the others sound like they're from Hangable Auto Bulb

yes please. be interested to hear it. i'd also have thought more than one oscillator and more than one lfo would make monosynth pads a lot easier.

isn't that just l.f.o pulsewidth modulation?

here is a quick reedham style riff with the l.f.o pulsewidth

jtr.mp3

here is a pad sound from the sh-101

ppaaddd.mp3

and the settings

that pad sound from the sh 101 sounds pretty lush to be honest man nice one, i understand what both of u are saying with the polysynth and monosynth.....but i dont want an all in one synth that can do both pads and acid bass.

really i want a really good acid bassline synth such as the roland sh101 or the yamaha cs5 - id like to know how these compare as the yamaha is cheaper as far as i know.

and then just another general synth that can do nice pads and such. that also isnt to expensive.

many thanks.

i think if i was to get this id rather get the

Ensoniq ESQ-1 with the keys included. i dont have a controller so...

so no one has compared a yamaha cs5 to a roland sh101?

Ok, you weren't very clear about wanting 2 different synths and wanting the second one to be cheap!

A hybrid is probably a good call for this - Ensoniq or a Kawai K3, Akai AX if you can find one.

Reasonably affordable true analogue polys with keyboards include the Roland Alpha Juno 2, Oberheim Matrix 6 and Korg Poly 800 (that last one is true analogue but not true poly!)

Probably no one owns both. If you want "acid", play it safe and get the 101. Both synths will retain their value, so it's a low-risk purchase.

If you want something for DA ACID BAES then try a Korg MS10. They're kinda cheap and the filter has BITE. I love mine like a child - and I love children.

I think you got that backwards. It's a true poly but not a true analog.

Oh and my vote - the matrix-1000. Endless programming possibilities (if you use a software editor).

matrix 6 is the exact same synth as the Matrix 1000, only with keys - which is what the op asked for.

the poly800 is true analogue (unless you are saying DCO = not true analogue, which would cover all the synths I mentioned plus the Matrix 1000 you mentioned, plus it's also not right).

it's not true polyphonic because all 8 voices share a single filter, which limits the sound (esp sweepy pads) a lot. The proper term for this kind of synth is paraphonic.
