ghost writer - 12/13

it's just great, definitely his most entertaining since frenzy, humorous and eh...contemporarily biting, flawless direction (the note scene is sheer brilliance) and good acting.. by brosnan especially

see it

gremlins 2 had [...] hulk hogan

The VHS version of that is so much better (with the screen going on full-noise) compared to the burn-in cinema version!

It also has a kick ass pastiche score by Jerry Goldsmith.

He makes references to all his movies, it's a crazy stop&go action like Looney Tunes Back in Action (his last score while he was basically on his dying bed). Referencing his own Rambo score, etc...

(I'm a soundtrack geek)

Inception: 8/10. As good as Hollywood gets these days. (I gave it "only", because most art films are on a different level, and the greatest Hollywood-made films get as far as 8 for me)

i watched a bunch movies in two 10 hour flights:

a mel gibson film about him taking revenge of his murdered daughter (forgot the name). 7.5/10 some good moments, sometimes i couldn't follow the plot (this could be due to shitty airplane sound quality) sometimes scenes seemed unrelated so i guess not a very well done film but in was interesting enough.

invictus: cheesy and cliche, but interesting enough and good performances. 8.1/10.

perry jackson and the lightning thief: fucking awful, terrible premise, terrible acting, one has to wonder how did they manage to get that cast on board (uma thurman, pierce brosnan, rosario dawson,..). 4/10

when in rome: romantic comedy archetype #4, but funny at times. 7/10.

how to train your dragon: meh. 6.5/10.

alice. tries too much, accomplishes too little. I like the cat and some other visuals. 7.2/10.

the incredibles: 5/5

the only better pixar movie is ratatouille. brad bird is AMAZING.

up: 3/5

meh. pretty much a jumbled mess, but cute. it's what i'd expect from a family film, rather than the transcendent brilliance that i expect from pixar.

ichi the killer: 3/5

both this and "up" are really really extremely soft 3's. i'd give them both 2.5, but i believe in the netflix "whole number out of 5" deal. i used to really find it restrictive, but i think that hate, dislike, like, really like, and love are all you really need. i might like to add 2.5 as "meh," but i'll give this and "up" 3 because they were both entertaining still.

ichi the killer... it was cute and funny. it was close to being 5/5, but the hypnosis thing.... ughh. ruined it. ichi could have been an interesting, meaningful character, but alas... i guess the really cheese CG might've dragged it down to 4/5 also, but in the end that was part of the humorous charm.

if ichi had seriously been all messed up from bullying and video games and porn and being a shut in, he would have been a compelling character that might have had something meaningful to say and would have been even more sympathetic. being the puppet of some 2-dimensional douchebag character totally ruined all that.

stiil, the scene where ichi is crying on the roof... affecting. until you consider the context.

Just got back from the cinema. Which I hadn't visited in months.

7 sounds about right. It's a clever movie but I got incredibly bored with all those drawn out "climaxes" with the same cheesy, bombastic Zimmer score we've been hearing since Batman Begins. And drop all the verbosity please. Make the dreams more dreamlike and let the images speak for themselves once and a while.

Just watched Passion of Christ.

Deserves 7/10 for trifling dialogue and for telling too little of Jesus' word/story, but gets 8/10 for showing how horrendous a punishment he willingly endured for love of mankind.

Inception:

As soon as they got to the "third level of the subconscious" anything artistic or meaningful about the movie was invalidated. What are they doing in Goldeneye's Siberia?? The p...r..o..c...e.....s......s of "jolting back" or whatever they do is lame, too. I liked it as a whole and walked out happy, but...

4/10.

'passion of the christ' is nothing but torture porn, and i think it works well on that level. a decent exploitation flick.

the road - 9/10: wow, i can't believe people are comparing this to the Book of Eli... this was actually an amazing movie! beautiful, deep, moving.

the thing that's mainly selling me on the remake right now is Richard Jenkins plays her guardian, which is pretty awesome because i love richard jenkins.

even though i am in principle opposed to such an unnecessary remake, i cant deny the trailer looks decent. (did you see it atop?)
