there was another called "monsters" that i only remember intro from

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahzBC-YwIAQ

can anyone think of other 80s scary shows?

I wish had the Chiller channel, looks like they have all this stuff

wow this just brought back so many childhood memories. besides Tales the only one that comes to mind is Eerie Indiana , but that was more for kids. Also if i remember correctly there also was an HBO version of outer limits in the early 90s that was very 'adult' like tales from the crypt

there is one particularly good episode of tales from the crypt directed by Richard Donner about a guy who through some sort of experimentation with cat DNA injections, he gives himself 9 lives and becomes a sideshow attraction where people from the audience get to kill him for entertainment.

i don't know why but i've never watched eerie indiana. i remember when it came on but i never got reception on the channel it came on, remember antennas? :sup:

i need to get a copy of it at some point, maybe it's not too late to build some nostalgia with it, forget about it, and rediscover 10 years from now?

that tales from the crypt episode is one of the first season eps, episode three. good stuff, the main role (joe pantoliano(looks like i knew his name if i change the titlecase to lowercase) was sort of real and subdued which made everything all the more absurd and carnivaly ... and arliss is kind of lol in it.

that hbo outer limits i remember being a little hit and miss like tales/crypt, but there were some i really liked. i should search that one out too. i can't remember if it was outer limits or not but there was one about a kid's encounter with a shadow person and that really messed me up when i was younger.. ok, fake edit? * it's from the 80s Twilight Zone, which i forgot existed!

found the episode on youtube:

i also realized that in my head i've blended this episode of the twilight zone with an hbo outer limits along the same lines.. under the bed

could always watch creepshow 1 and 2 and the twilight zone movie that killed those kids and vic morrow.

i've been reliving my childhood by watching loads of red dwarf. that show, interspersed with badly dressed people urging me to give money to my local PBS station, was like the highlight of my year when i was growing up.

i had a bad panic attack at some point and creepshow was in the background and possibly triggered it, along with whatever drug i was on way back when. so i still shy away from watching it. it was amazing / scary as a kid. and the twilight zone movie was also a favorite growing up, may have to give that a revisit. thanks for these.

and the twilight zone movie that killed those kids and vic morrow.

i have no idea why but that wording made me lol, i guess it was an unfathomable string when i started the sentence.

the king's speech

9/10

really moving film.. never knew the hardships that George VI went through.. Firth did an amazing job

Also he and his family supported the nazis.

Dogtooth. I liked it, as far as that's possible.

I don't think it has anything to do with parents not being able to let go of their kids. I don't think there's any emotion whatsoever in this film. I took it as a comment on socialisation (and perhaps the static nature of the human animal?)

Anyway... 7.5/10

the fighter - slightly disappointing but my own fault - i'd hyped it up in my head for some reason. the boxing scenes were a joke, like stand there and get hit, ok now your turn, way worse than rocky. marky mark can't act and christian bale... not sure but something wasn't right... maybe he over-acted? 3/5

true grit - loved it. bridges and damon were amazing... girl was annoying but that was the point. recognizably cohen bros. i've never seen the original so no idea how it compares, but i was able to enjoy it on it's own merit. 4/5

127 hours - surprisingly entertaining though i'm not a fan of boyle's film making except for shallow grave and trainspotting. thought it would be boring but he managed to pad out the story pretty well and the lead guy carried it. 3/5

paul

funny but tarnished by having someone as recognizable as seth rogan do the voice (pet hate of mine perhaps?). was great to see bill hader and kristen wiig in there who were both the best things about the movie. jason bateman needs to fuck off. i've read it elsewhere and have to agree it just wasn't as good as hotfuzz or shaun of the dead or (obv) spaced. missing edgar? maybe or maybe this humour is out of date now. still good but a step down from past heights. maybe i am just not nerdy enough...

lincoln lawyer l.i.v.i.n/10

watched it with a big bag of buttery popcorn nom nom nom. it was entertaining. after the popcorn wore off i started questioning why things happened.

snl

been on an snl catch up recently. watching the newist season most recently. some great sketches and of course some bunk. mostly good though. 'whats up with that' is so funny.

IMDB, I'll usually have a read about people involved, but the message board, well I think I just like winding myself up.

haven't seen true grit yet but I agree 100% with both those comments, esp regarding Christian Bale's overacting. There are sequences where he is fantastic, and then scenes where it seems just like C. Bale playing a role, I noticed that especially during the prison scenes.

Punch Drunk Love - 7/10 a bit disappointed, it was all going so well and then it ended. Guess it was part of the style and playing on cliché and all that but it just pissed me off and left me unsatisfied. Still some great sequences and still took me by surprise, so its a well earned 7

Bubble - 9/10 shockingly good movie that has almost no qualities i can describe about it that would make anyone here want to see it. Very slight similarities to Fargo (only in the banality and naturalism of it) basically one of the best Steven Soderbergh movies, i think it's a better film than the Informant and pretty much anything he's made in the last 6 years

Rare Exports

7.5/10

Colossal set of nuts on this film. Ludicrous concept executed with great class. Oh and if you think the trailer spoiled you, it didn't.

the prison scenes were especially cringey but even the opening scenes where they're walking through the streets i was thinking "hmmm, not sure about this".

+ watch true grit asap, it's great!

i watched that marky mark cop movie with will farrell. it was horrible. marky mark just yelled the entire movie.

i reviewed that a few pages back and gave it a pretty good review.

marky mark isn't going to win an oscar but he got most of the laughs in this film.

the good guys btw

i do a good impression of mark walhberg from the fighter when he says "i was embarressed. i told them all i was going to win"

Shotgun Stories: 7/10

I liked it. Despite the tragedies I liked the way of life and (on the surface at least) simple attitudes, mind sets and honesty of the characters.
