In a recent thread about artists deserving their own subforum, it was suggested by several members of having a 'music only' subforum, that, would only consist of music-related topics (not the discussion of making music; that's what the EKT subforum is for). This would allow forum users who want to read more music-related topics not needing to sift through all the cruft in General Banter, and leave GenBan as a place where people can talk about anything non-music and let people who want to talk about their favourite artists or releases discuss things in a like-minded environment.

Now, I'm particularly not one for more divisions in the forum structure, but if moderated properly, it could work - but the question is, what do the rest of you think? Post your thoughts/feelings about this idea below, and take a moment to vote as well, and let's see where this does or does not go.

I think the addition of a brand new forum would increase the clutter, BUT combining all the artist subforums + new & upcoming releases and making THAT the new "music subforum" would be the best course of action. (then with the live show forum as an offshoot of that). Then it'd basically be "Batcock", "Music", and "Your shitty dicking around in Ableton" forums.

i like hanging out in gb and reading all the shit while still having the opportunity to catch a good thread about music as it floats by.

i hate having to jump back and forth between forums.

it does sound pretty cool though and if enough people like it than i'd be fine with it.

General Banter

Music [ Music, Tours, New Releases]

Knob Diddlers [ General, Creations, Classifieds]

No more artist subforums.

That's how it should go.

I think its a good idea. But you could go a step further and make the artist specific forums archive only so the active topics are all in the main music forum or general banter.

our musical tastes, and interests in poop mingle very often. With out the mixture both could easily get more boring. I mean look what happened to the BoC forum when you isolated it, pretty awful! Gotta keep it mixed I think.

I say no unless we can first get that enhancement that tags post topics so we could potentially see all subforum posts on one page of threads

i would vote for 4 total subforums of general discussion

get rid of artist specific subforums (cept maybe aphex out of deference to the history of this board and having (likely) the largest fanbase and regular posts)

subforums:

music - any artist, music only topics

new releases (is a good reference)

general banter (non music, more or less as it is already, nsfw, bacon, lolcats, tv etc)

ekt

my two cents

merge the artist subforums into a music forum. i think the concept of tagging that we wanted to incorporate can be solved more simply by people writing proper subject lines.

also, we have these topic emoticons:

Why not add some like this: :snares::squarepusher_logo:

That'd be awesome, and maybe have a drop down menu that filters the forum by keyword/artist.

I like this idea of combining the artist subforums into one in theory; but what happens is when a new artist release comes out, it will drown out all the others (imagine once the new Aphex release(s) come out, the forum will be swamped with discussion, and less active artists like BoC and Squarepusher, etc. will get pushed to the bottom. It will revive the whole reason artist discussion was separated from GenBan in the first place.

I just don't think this is going to happen unless Chaosmachine or Blicero get a wild hair up their asses and decide to bang out the code... besides, the "new posts" link does essentially the same thing...

There's the rub; getting people to obey that would be difficult - I had thought about making custom icons for the topic indicators (post icons) to indicate what artist it's about as a visual indicator...

I can see a lot of fanboy-ism possible in that type of forum, but hey why not. If it fails, we can always go back. I'm indifferent.

But is it necessary? 'A change is gonna come, but it needs a reason!

That's another problem; once the forums are merged, it would be a bitch to un-sort them back to separate forums.

Why don't we just rename 'General Banter' the 'Poop and Fart Forum' since that's what it's going to turn into anyway.

or you could just call it 'arrested development' and most members will just wrongly assume its a reference to the popular TV show.

I still like one discussion forum + ekt, the way it used to be. but, if we must have some sort of division between batcock and music discussion, than this:

I think the addition of a brand new forum would increase the clutter, BUT combining all the artist subforums + new & upcoming releases and making THAT the new "music subforum" would be the best course of action. (then with the live show forum as an offshoot of that). Then it'd basically be "Batcock", "Music", and "Your shitty dicking around in Ableton" forums.
