I just listened to an old mixtape and it made me want to geek out and talk with some other dnb hedz out there about the good old days.

I'm sure there will be some debate as to when it is specifically, but to me it will always be 1993-1996.

93 was the year jungle really broke from hardcore and became its own animal.
1994 seemed like the year the producers wanted to push it as far as it would go with the crazy rinses (a la Suburban Base). That seemed to last throughout 1995.
In 1996 it was all about jump-up and hardstep. Darkstep was new and wasn't the two step leviathan it is today.
Around 1997 it became a bit too hyped and although there was still tons of dope shit coming out, it seemed like more and more of the rollers were intended to be ready-made pop anthems instead of ass-shaking ammunition.

Thoughts?
Tacks?
Labels?

Lets talk.

What do you think of guys that rode the budding novelty of drum and bass to success in the mid 90's like Roni Size and Goldie?

As an outsider, I've never understood why they are so popular.

It appears the text that accompanied that video was deleted. I must have copy and pasted over it or something. I don't know a whole lot about Drum and Bass or Jungle and I would actually like to know more. I have done a little research, but still have a lot to learn. I found the video I posted by chance and really like it. For all I know it could suck in the eyes of old school junglists or whatever but I like it a lot.

Yeah. That seems to be when jungle/dnb graduated fully from hardcore.

I still get a tingly feeling from some of those older tracks.

one thing I love about jungle. is that it is hardcore.

some other key cuts (I could be here all day):

technical itch - hidden sound

prisoners of technology - trigger technology

sniper - dub plate pressure

gang related & mask - dedication

johnny jungle - killa sound (pascals mix)

ganja kru - on that dust

It's funny really. I don't think any of you seem to have heard any early goldie stuff. He has done some amazing stuff. I also think timeless has some amzing tracks on it. As for the later stuff I can take it or leave it but credit where credit is due.

To name a just a few.

Other stuff I love.

When it drops the fucking timestretching on the break is immense!

To be honest there is too much. I have a really good mix which i'll put up later if any of you are interested.

I finally found it!

OMG @ 2:17!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBQP71yPEX4

I have been trying to find the name of this track for over 10 years!

It was om a Mystical Influence mix-tape I've had since "back in the day", following "Rough and Tough" by Tech Itch (oh gosh!)

I always thought it was a remix of "Bass Go Boom".

can someone please explain to me what happened to Phoetek, one minute he's making high production values martial arts music videos set to sword clanking break beats and the next minute he's doing gay circuit party music

well at first i figured there was just more money in gay circuit party music, but it was his modus operandi stuff that got him noticed/opened the door for him in film/tv soundtracks/sounds. so i dunno why he abandoned the photek sound. apparently theres a new album on the way, i remember him saying he's "going back to dnb" ...but i dunno what that means for him anymore exactly; martial art dnb or wobblewobble dnb.

some his early vinyl stuff under aliases are a good companion to plug
