Guest hahathhat Posted May 6, 2009 Share Posted May 6, 2009 alright, let's cut the foreplay » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « there was this time i was lying in bed, zoning out, and i started to get into thought loops. it was kind of like a spirograph... i'd think of a picture and it'd loop around and come back, mixed in with all the other stuff i'd put in to varying degrees. it worked for sounds too, things got pretty autechre in there. what i would give to have been able to plug a cable into my head and record that... i'd seen the above photo of billy corgan earlier that day, i threw it into my thought loop by accident and i found it right hilarious. only later did i go back and look at the image, and notice the ouroboros behind billy!! anyways, as i mucked around with it, i started to get a better sense of what was going on. everyone's heard that we have BRAIN WAVES, your delta waves slow down when you sleep, the brainwaves of monks change when they meditate, and so on. i realized they were involved here, functioning like the clock that keeps your computer's CPU running at 2ghz or whatever (which is based on the oscillations of a quartz crystal, by the way! :laughing:). i got the sense of two distinct "clocks". one controlled the rate of my thought loop, e.g. the rotation speed of my mental spirograph. the other was much, much weirder. the thought loop, the spirograph, had a smooth motion, as a real spirograph does, its clock acting like a rheostat to control how fast it spins. but, this other one moved like a clock. tick, tick, tick. it advanced in discrete little leaps, snapshots, strobes, whatever. imagine the first clock, thought loop, as a movie clip. imagine the other as a series of still photos. now mash those two concepts together -- a series of movie clips. each movie clip loops over and over, forever. you could show someone the first movie clip, the second, and so on. if you timed it right, the end result would be a continuous movie clip, even though it's a bunch of little clips. this is my impression of how we perceive time. when you get stuck in a thought loop, you're staying in one clip. it's like pressing the "hold and loop" button on a delay, and your delay time is the length of the clip. you with me so far?? these two clocks interact with each other -- regulate each other, like two little kids on a seesaw working together to keep either end from touching the ground. however, the way that happens is more akin to the famous drinking bird that mesmerized homer simpson. as the thought loop spins around, it gradually fills up a little bucket. when the bucket is full, the weight causes it to tip over and dump out the water. you advance to the next movie clip, and the process repeats. imagine the bucket has a leak. if you don't fill it fast enough, it won't ever empty. it's like the drinking bird again, you need to pass a certain threshold for anything to happen, and then it happens all at once. the movie clip analogy is a good way to to explain things, but this is as far as i can take it. the reality was it felt more like watching a tree grow in time-lapse. every time it looped, it grew slightly differently. i had some degree of control, saying -- branch here instead of there, and then every time it grew my change would remain. so, in effect, over time, i could impose my will on how it grew, but it was a cumulative thing. there was no undo, there was just focusing elsewhere and having previous items of focus atrophy. it's entirely possible i was just vividly hallucinating bullshit, but i don't think i was. it was too intense. at worst, it's a metaphor i've interpreted too literally. however, i still don't really understand it all, and that bugs me. p.s. as i came out of it and was mulling it over, i had this great idea -- only to find out it was called granular synthesis and some jerk called xenakis had it before i was born.
