akai xr20 and mpc step sequencing

i told my aunt i produced music on the computer and told her i wanted some new gear and she said she would buy me what i wanted (she lives in chicago where i'm from) and i just gave her a hint which was 'akai' and i thought she wouldn't be so cheap as to buying me an xr20 and i don't understand how you program beats by using the step sequencer, it's totally different than what i'm used to as far as the electribes are and i don't understand how the manual explains how to.

can someone please lay out a diagram how you would do it like a electribe or point me where to find something that doesn't require much musical knowledge. i'm buying a mixer soon to use the xr20 with my emx-1/esx-1. thanks.

Don't really know of xr20, but I have an mpc500 as well as an electribe esx,mpc I use to tap in beats where I use korg for step sequencing. Turn on timing correct feature and tap your beats in.

these things are a great buy. A dj friend of mine has one and though...i did understand how to work it when i first satrted playing with it, it took me about an hour before i was making interesting things. Guess i had to get used to it, as i myself was familar mostly with electribes like u, and its pretty different from the korg style. More mpc than x0x.

if you've had a boss dr-202 dr. groove the way you program by step sequencing it's the same with the xr20. tapping in beats is okay but if you're not exactly acurrate i'm thinking that's when the step sequencer come sin handy.

cheap? that things a couple hundred dollars

they're going for $319 with free stuff on musiciansfriend.com but my aunt is pretty wealthy and i'm happy with what i've got but since i wanted the lowest priced mpc, the mpc 500. i should have been more specific what i wanted.

can you sample with those ?

no, but it has a mic input to rap to your beats if you run it out through a p.a. which i'll probably never use.

the one thing i like about it are the sounds like bass drums, snares, claps, hi-hats, cymbals and some of the sound fx. the sounds are quality. it's really a hip-hop beat box but it can be used for any style of electronic music especially if you run it into a sampler for creating breaks.
