Max for Live

also you can't really open max4live patches in max/msp and the other way around, but i mean if you want to edit an instrument built in max4live in the standalone version you could easily just copy/paste all the objects in the patch back and forth.

if what you just said here is actuallyt he case, that the programs are not cross compatible with eachother. i think i won't be buying it. I have a crap load of Max 5 patches that i've been dying to integrate into a sequencer without using Pluggo. So i take it i cannot do this?

i could be wrong (my beta has run out and i'm too lazy to download the next one). but i don't believe it's as simple as going "file/open" then browsing for your existing max patches, because they use a new patch format for max4live. but i'm sure you can just "select all/copy" your existing max patches from max/msp and then "paste" into max4live. it may require a few modifications if you haven't used the "plugin/plugout" objects or whatever (depending on whether you are using instrument/effect/midi objects), but all in all it should be a pretty simple process.

again i'm kinda talking out of my ass here as i don't have a working beta anymore to test these things out. maybe i'll grab it tomorrow and let you know.

With that in mind, you also could not take a max patch and open it in max4live (I believe), however I saw some people on the beta forums pasting wierd text that represented patches made outside of max4live into it.

ok ok i've relaxed a little bit, i don't think this will be much of a pain in the ass. was it this forum you were reading - http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=127791&start=15

they are also talking about copying the maxmsp patch text and copying it into an empty Abelton Max4Live device . I see very little people talking about it though which makes me worry about this method's level of success

edit: so really in the end, unless you really love working in the standalone Max5 and cant be without it, the only reason to still own it if you are content with Max4Live solely is to copy individual pieces from Max5 patches . I believe that a Max5 patch can load into a text file without using the actual program and from there you can copy the entire thing and load it into an abelton device, however this might be tricky if you've never actually seen the patch before. i dont know im still torn on this.

i also just thought of another headache, what about usage of common maxmsp externals like ~bonk , will we have to wait for them to be rewritten for the max4live runtime? a lot of the best maxmsp patches require a 3rd party external object

Sorta...

Actually when you join the beta team you get access to a hidden forum on Ableton's site where they throw the blocks of data around all day long. I noticed a lot of talk about porting Max5 patches to Max4Live, especially someone undertook the responsibility of porting some monome apps to max4live with success so at the very least I know a translation between the two is possible.

Stuff like:

I have no idea about the bonk command.

simply put...blowing my mind with the possibilities. it feels like you can do anything...i don't know what else to say. very very highly recommended if you like max/msp but find it too much of a pain in the ass for sequencing and shit. plus the way it integrates into the Live API is fucking awesome.

did you make patches yourself or are you grabbing premade max4live patches or taking guts out of regular Max 4/5 patches?

i quickly played around with all the effects and instruments that came with it stock, but yesterday I spent a good portion of the day just hacking control over Live API objects via OSC using the ipod touch. good fun for sure! but ya, i'm definitely interested in it for building my own stuff. next thing i'm going to do is a giant LFO machine that can be assigned to any ableton instrument/effect parameter. it will feature standard waveshapes as well as drawable waveforms, and there will be maybe like 8 LFOs that get mixed together in an additive way to create unpredictable results on the output. then the waveforms would be brought in and out with a fader for a performable lfo setup. think of the wobble bass possibilities!

the newest version of Abelton 8 suite for Mac has just been cracked and is currently being distributed....

And apparently working with Max 4Live. Just download and install and the Live crack authorizes it.

yeah that was fast! one thing so far i haven't been able to get around, is can you load multiple instances of Max4Live? I guess it would probably be just a matter of assigning different midi channels to each track but so far i can't get both of them to stop triggering from the same midi pattern.

I started downloading, and then I thought no, I'm not going to have time for the next month and by that time there will be a stable release and somebody will have done all the hard work and produced some immediately useful stuff (hopefully involving NI's Maschine).

yeah... you can load as many as you like... they act just like instruments or audio effect, or MIDI plugins... as far as your specific problem, I'm not sure what you mean, or how it's set up.

I very much doubt the mac crack works like that. If you want to try it out I would even go to the length of trying it on a different OS partition. AiR seem to have gotten the hang of the protection, but you can never quite tell with Ableton.

I've read a lot about Max for Live....

Is it truly worth it if you already own Max 5? aren't there ways on the internet to integrate Max 5 with Live 8?

ha thanks for reviving this good ole thread! konkreet performer is the shit man, not sure what to think of this synth though. doesn't really seem like anything more than a case of:

"yo dawg, we heard you like the theoretical idea of Konkreet Performer but were too damn lazy to ever end up programming all the nodes out to do anything, so we put KP in a synth so you can KP while you EKT!"

Does any max/m4l users know if it would be possible or worth the trouble to attempt converting any of the m4l pluggo library back into max max4.6/pluggo3.6 exported vst? Am I right in thinking that all of this could be achieved using demo's of all softwares?
