Not sure about favourite, but most influential would probably be the dungeon music from the Zelda64 soundtracks if those count (heard it when I was <10, was the first time I was consciously aware of there being more types of music out there than what was played on the radio).

yes!

I assume thats because its about 20 years old but I will listen to it more to see if my impression will shift

what early stars of the lid is worth it? all of it?

I currently have "And Their Refinement of the Decline" and "The Tired Sounds Of Stars Of The Lid"

It's all guitar-only stuff on Music For Nitrous Oxide, Ballasted and Avec Laudenum. I personally think this was their best period, I don't really subscribe to the band's sound once strings came into the picture. Considering you enjoy that though, you may find the earlier stuff too "dry"...at least some people do. Not much comes close to this though:

I think I could comfortably call that SOTL's "Stone In Focus"

Ballasted Orchestra is a beautiful album, and yes, that is one of the best songs on the album.

Lotsa good stuff mentioned in this thread but I want to second the notion that William Basinski is really amazing.

David Tagg - Fundamentals Of Orchid Biology

i love this album, along with "waist deep seas of milk". and brian, your "cursive light" album is beautiful as well.

NASA Voyager Recordings - Symphonies Of The Planets

hardcore ambient.

my favorites have to be:

koda - movements

early stars of the lid

and most of hakobune's albums

Miles Tilmann - 3D Concepts Part 1

R-130100-1175038042.jpeg

way underrated.

All three parts are fantastic! Though to be fair to the thread I'd consider those ambient techno, as opposed to strictly ambient...

Thanks a lot man. David's WDSOM is definitely up there for me as well but something about Orchids just does it every time.

And yeah, that NASA stuff is incredible. Still continues to amaze me at how musical and accessible it is, considering the source.

Donis - Vacuum

Tidal - Golem and Man

Asmus Tietchens - Eine Menge Papier

Christian Renou/Anemone Tube - Transference

Archon Satani - In Shelter

Robert Scott Thompson - At The Still Point Of The Turning World

Markus Reuter - Digitalis

Autocreation - Mettle

Asmus Tietchens - Epsilon-Menge

There are more but these definitely do it for me. The Asmus Tietchens one are a little heavy on the electro-acoustic side and the Autocreation stuff has beats in it but these ones have a quasi-ambient feel to them, so they pass imo.
