Sleeping Headphones

Hey guys,

Like many of you, I love to listen to music whilst I sleep.

Regular earbud headphones are pretty hopeless to use, as they create discomfort, making it only possible to sleep on my back. I'd like a pair of proper headphones that will stay on when I'm sleeping on my side, without causing discomfort of damaging the headphones.

Thanks,

Calum

I use big Technics headphones but they also force you to sleep on your back, actually can't think of any headphones that don't.

Don't cause too many problems for me, except that it's not good for the cans, they're comfortable and usually they end up somewhere next to me unscathed, it's only once or twice a month that I wake up strangled by the cord.

Been considering installing a pair of speakers in my bedroom though.

I'm interested in this too.

I'd probably go with that if I lived alone.

any pair of canalphones would work, but not everyone likes them. 7527-IMG3713s.jpg

And yes, headphones + sleeping will probably give you tinnitus. "Sod" the pillow speakers. Just get a cheap pair of speakers and put them next to your bed.

How about pillow speakers?

Pillow Speaker is a great tool for individuals with Autism, Sensory Integration and Dysfunction. lol watmm btw

The 1-star reviews are pretty discouraging

oops, i wasn't really recommending that one; just linked because of the autism bit.. Yeah these things would probably warrant more research than regular headphones as there must be tons of crappy speakers being sold.

I'm curious...why would sleeping with headphones be more likely to give you tinnitus than regular 'awake' headphone use? I've never heard of this.

I use my crappy stock iPod headphones if I want to listen to music in bed. The sound isn't great, but I usually have it on very low anyway so I can actually fall asleep. I don't like to use my in-hear Sennheisers because it's weird having my ears plugged when in bed and trying to sleep, plus I don't want to block my hearing of any noise that may happen in my apartment. I kind of feel paranoid, I guess. And the iPod ones are usually not uncomfortable when laying on my side.

Just constant noise in your ears isnt good for hearing. Night is usually the time when you have the most silence.

I actually looked up what I have after my Tinnitus post. And it would seem that I dont actually have tinnitus.

When there is complete silence, which isnt very often, I can hear a slight ringing in my ears. Its worse when I'm drunk and I've no idea why. But I read a few other peoples experiences and it seems that persistant music listening results in a ringing in the ear. But when they stop listening to earphone/headphones for maybe a week or more it went away.

I must try this. Ive never gone a week without using them. I was thinking about buying earplug and wearing them just to get a few hours of silence a day.

I also thought about buying a pair of those noise headphones builders wear and putting them over earphones so I dont have to listen at quite so high volumes.

I dont really have any evidence to back it up, and im probably being a hippocrite as i enjoy sleeping with a fan on and it's never given me any trouble with my hearing. However, headphones, being so close to your ear (especially canalphones) might "tire" your ears more than listening to ambient sound reverberating off the walls of your room, but take that with a grain of salt, as there's probably no real evidence to prove this is true. It all comes down to whether you believe people who say theyve damaged their hearing by sleeping with headphones, which many claim they have (and many claim they haven't). Either way, listening to one album on low volume as you drift off is not going to do any real damage in the long term.

I looked around for one of those pillow speakers a while ago but I couldn't find one that had any indication that it was actually any good

they are basically really quiet speakers... i don't know how one could rate them, they are all the same ie no extra bass features, surround... just simple speakers

i need quiet to sleep, if im very tired, i can fall asleep with some music on, but it disturbs me while i sleep, i wake up momentarily all the time, and i feel completely wiped out and as if i havent slept atall when i wake up.

also listening to earphones all the time is fine as long as its really quietly. its easy to have earphones too loud though.

It's just lovely to trail away into a hypnogogic state while some ambient is playing in the background.

i have had about 3 pairs of Sony MDR-V150 Headphones as i don't trust myself with expensive technology and they're not bad for the £9.99 price tag,

with one set, one earcup has completely broken off, still works however and they're pretty good for sleeping with as you can lie on the loose one...... however it does mean you have to change the headphones round whenever you want to turn over, so not ideal....

shameless plug for recent ambient sleeping mix
