is it democratic to allow institutions that are fundamentally undemocratic and against basic human rights ?

do you believe that those burqa wearing women really chose to wear them ?

not that i believe that the motive for pushing those laws was that chivalric..

There's no law, but a proposition for the law. And the majority of the senate is kinda voting for it, but they want more time do think about it, but because of the upcoming elections there's no time.

They should also ban the fucking Cross with that anorexic Jew on it.

Oh, we already did that.

Well, on walls in courtrooms and classrooms and stuff.

this isn't being done for issues of safety or security, if anyone believes that, i have a huge amount of money to give you from a prince in nigeria. all i need is your account authorization, please. people love to come up with lengthy justifications, humans are experts at intellectual dishonesty. the burqa is being banned because a sizeable portion of the population is afraid of muslims and thinks everytime they see a burqa there must be a bunch of bombs strapped around the lady's chest. and that's all there really is to it. it's islamophobia.

There has always been a law here, for some time, that forbids anyone to conceal their face while on the streets. For example, stuff like this:

Bivakmuts%203%20gaats.jpg

And this of course sparked burqa debates, and a line has been drawn. It's more of a matter of making sure people adapt to your laws, instead that laws get adapted by people moving in. But you already seem to know that, because you know so much of the world and how scaredy-pantsy people think, so let's dismiss any factors involving this decision as "intellectual dishonesty" and go for the populair cynical opinion that makes everyone look like bigots, wich as we know, is always 100% true. :emotawesomepm9:

I read the law states that you can't wear anything that is fully covering your body. Except when it's carnaval!

aah, some good old belgianism :emotawesomepm9:

I mean seriously , if this a religion thing , they should also ban everything else , including the cross , that funny hat Jews use

oi you

av-4125.png

and whatever Scientologists have up their arse.

lol

i'm fairly apathetic to banning the full veil (guess i'd never like the people beneath them anyway - intellectually or sexually lol) but banning all religious clothing would be extremely cuntish. there's no sharp divide between "religious" and "cultural". may as well fucking ban political t-shirts.

I don't know if it needs a ban...

but I think burkas are a pretty fucked up thing and the mark of an oppressive religion.

as stupid as believing in Hell, God, etc..

Its their country they can ban whatever the fuck they like.

It's

and no country should be able to dictate what people can wear...

I understand why people shouldn't walk around in public naked but they should be able to wear as much clothes as they want....

In a perfect world nudity would not be a problem either but the current state of the human psyche doesn't allow for such a freedom without an epic invasion of men with erections raping all of the holes that they could and would (wood)....

anyway, whether it's islam, hinduism, christianity, i have no respect for any of it, so i couldn't care less really. silly folk.

i totally agree with you.

i think people should be able to wear what they want and suffer the consequences through other people's reactions. if you wear a burka, yeah, you'll miss out on a lot of social interaction but, shit, that's your problem. it's not my problem or the government's.

however, i do understand how the burka is a method of oppression. i don't think the trend will spread though, like how a lot of christians dress very conservatively (remember those 'christian' bathing suits?) but the majority dress according to 'normal' standards.

also, anyone remember the deal a few weeks ago in the uk with muslim nurses refusing to comply with regulations to wear shirts that expose the wrist to elbow, because it wasn't 'modest'? the hospitals they worked at had to allow them to wear gloves that had to be changed after every patient visit, which is supposed to be as effective, but still kinda silly. i think things like that are ridiculous and they should be fired or forced to comply, because it's something that is messing with the safety/health of people that are subject to their care.

This whole thing to me is about religion not being special, i.e. religious motivations for breaking the law are not somehow superior to whatever other motivation. That's all there is to it and I couldn't agree more.

It's like that sikh guy who rode his motorcycle without a helmet (mandatory in Belgium), said it was impossible for him to wear one because he's forbidden by religion to remove his turban in public, and still got fined.

OH NOES BELGIUM = SIKHOPHOBE HITLERS

On the one hand, you want to create a society where people can co-exist regardless of their beliefs. On the other hand, you want the rights of your citizens not to be trampled upon. I mean it's degrading as fuck and frankly rather depressing to me that some women want to wear the burqa.

unlike the balaclava, or any thing else that hides the face, the burka seems to be expression, expressing faith.

so when i see this being banned, i see it as attacking freedom of expression.

they can express it in other ways, sure, but when the state tells you how to express your views, then that's fucking troubling.

It's an oppressive religion but i want to wear whatever i want.

And for the turban motorcycle guy. He should be able to take reposibility for his own actions. He's not hurting anyone else by driving without a helmet.

Laws that inflicts with one persons own reposibility for themselves sucks.

I would agree, but that's beside the point. The laws exist, so they should at least apply to everyone equally.

Not trying to be an arse.. I'm just saying the practice of making someone wear a burqa is degrading. And the notion that someone would choose to wear one depresses me. The thought of such a sexist practice so ingrained in someone's mind makes me sad. Also trying to raise the issue of at what point, if any, does the government have a position to say, for the good of women's dignity (and being respected by others), this sort of practice is counter intuitive.

If someone wants to wear a burqa, they can go ahead. I won't give them a hard time for it, but I will be thinking to myself, I'd never make my girlfriend or wife do that even if I was raised Muslim.

the amount of people on watmm who seem to be unclear on the concept of basic freedoms is surprising.

also is true that wearing a balaclava with eye and mouth holes is illegal in the UK? I wonder if that's true anywhere in the US? Would be pretty absurd considering you can wear dark sunglasses a beard, and a hoodie or any other disguise (halloween mask? plastic surgery?) and achieve the same effect.

But you never were raised a Muslim, otherwise you might feel differently. Change your cohort, change your mind.

And if you read any of the autobiographies or "life narratives" of these women, you will see that some indeed wear the burqa out of choice.

Just living in the western world doesn't make us the high arbiters of society and culture.
