this isn't being done for issues of safety or security, if anyone believes that, i have a huge amount of money to give you from a prince in nigeria. all i need is your account authorization, please. people love to come up with lengthy justifications, humans are experts at intellectual dishonesty. the burqa is being banned because a sizeable portion of the population is afraid of muslims and thinks everytime they see a burqa there must be a bunch of bombs strapped around the lady's chest. and that's all there really is to it. it's islamophobia.

i think people should be able to wear what they want and suffer the consequences through other people's reactions. if you wear a burka, yeah, you'll miss out on a lot of social interaction but, shit, that's your problem. it's not my problem or the government's.

 

however, i do understand how the burka is a method of oppression. i don't think the trend will spread though, like how a lot of christians dress very conservatively (remember those 'christian' bathing suits?) but the majority dress according to 'normal' standards.

 

also, anyone remember the deal a few weeks ago in the uk with muslim nurses refusing to comply with regulations to wear shirts that expose the wrist to elbow, because it wasn't 'modest'? the hospitals they worked at had to allow them to wear gloves that had to be changed after every patient visit, which is supposed to be as effective, but still kinda silly. i think things like that are ridiculous and they should be fired or forced to comply, because it's something that is messing with the safety/health of people that are subject to their care.

This whole thing to me is about religion not being special, i.e. religious motivations for breaking the law are not somehow superior to whatever other motivation. That's all there is to it and I couldn't agree more.

Not trying to be an arse.. I'm just saying the practice of making someone wear a burqa is degrading. And the notion that someone would choose to wear one depresses me. The thought of such a sexist practice so ingrained in someone's mind makes me sad. Also trying to raise the issue of at what point, if any, does the government have a position to say, for the good of women's dignity (and being respected by others), this sort of practice is counter intuitive.

 

If someone wants to wear a burqa, they can go ahead. I won't give them a hard time for it, but I will be thinking to myself, I'd never make my girlfriend or wife do that even if I was raised Muslim.

But you never were raised a Muslim, otherwise you might feel differently. Change your cohort, change your mind.

And if you read any of the autobiographies or "life narratives" of these women, you will see that some indeed wear the burqa out of choice.

Just living in the western world doesn't make us the high arbiters of society and culture.
