I don't really read Pitchfork (except for when people link to it on messageboards) and actively avoid Hype Machine - I just tend to go by what my friends are chatting about on twitter. If I was gonna pick a band that I thought were being hyped, OMG if I hear one more person tell me "aaahh, you HAVE to hear Rene Hell, it's AMAZING!!!!!" I'm gonna hurl -> that has been overhyped to me and it's pleasant enough Krauty experimentalism but it's nothing great. Heard Emeralds after being sent a random link and didn't know what to expect (the last link this person sent me was to Mordant Music, so it could be anything, really) and I was pleasantly surprised.
