Free protection

ok so last night my computer went completely up the spout, I've managed to boot it back up using the original boot disc, and now I have managed to install Windows Vista (it was previously running Windows XP, which appears to have been completely removed from my hard drive). I am relieved to find all of my documents etc still on and accesible from my hard drive though. Now I use ESET security but I am having trouble activating it, so my friend is coming round to do that for me over the weekend, but until then I need some sort of free protection, can you guys recommend anything? I've never really used any free download protection so am unsure as to what to use, thanks for the help guys :-).

p.s. I'm on a Dell C521 and running Windows Vista

Im not help but its just a place to air out my rage and warn people.

IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE TO GET 1 YEARS COVER ON MCAFEE, TELL THEM TO STICK IT UP THEIR ARSE. WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT THAT THING IS.

Edit: Thats in reference to anyone buying a new premade computer.

both mcafee and norton are closer to virus than antivirus. yes, i'd love to add a minute to my boot time, you pieces of shit.

only commercial product that is worth the money is NOD32 imo.

Right well I'm just installing the free AVG now, it comes with a 30day full protection trial, so that's spot on (my friend who's with me said that's what he uses also).

Thanks very much kaini, top man.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.#

chassis I've used mcaffee before and yes, it is a load of shite!

wtf? no! there's a completely free and nagware-free version!

ON THE LEFT. don't bother with any of trial bullshit, uninstall whatever you have installed.

the sad thing is before they got bought out, mcafee was an amazing utility, one of the first free command-line antivirs.

Christ, I hate McAffee [edit: what it's become, per Kaini's post]. I use AVG on my work (Win7) comp and it's been reasonably 'not shitty.'

Its not the boot time that gets me. Its when you're downloading a file and mcfee decides that you cant have it.

Hmm, this file looks a bit naughty we'll have to put it in this box. Oh, whats that? You want the file? We'll you'll have to get through this maze to get it mhahahahahahaha

Im going to delete it next week, I bet that'll a fucking chore.

Edit: Dont ask me what I was downloading :whistling:

I've been running AVG Free for yonks now, but have been getting more and more pissed off with constantly having to restart after installing updates and slowing down to dial-up speed when a scan's running. Am I better to just stick or twist and try the Microsoft Security Essentials? (Running 32-bit Windows 7 with 3gb RAM).

n.b., I'm a computard.

don't get me started on the fact it needs a special util to uninstall, and i'd fuckin still run ccleaner afterwards because even the util doesn't remove EVERYTHING

Theres like 10 tutorials on youtube on how to get rid of EVERYTHING. The fact that it comes up in the Google suggestion box says it all really.

Yeah the one on the left is the one I got, that free version though came with a 30day free trial of the £30 package, which has extra protection on it, when the 30 days is up it just defaults back to the settings of the free package :). (I'll be uninstalling this weekend when ESET is up and running anyway)

Yeah back in 99/2000 (I think?) my Dad swore by mcafee, not anymore though :(

Thanks for the replies and help guys. Amazing how quick it can be to get a PC sorted and ready for use these days. I am baffled this fucking thing is still, in effect, actually fully functioning.

this kind of thing seems to happen often with you..... WTF ARE YOU DOING!?!?!?!

Last time I was hacked via facebook for my poker chips, to get to my facebook though you have to first hack ones email, so I had my email hacked and everything deleted.

First time I've had any sort of hard drive failure.

at one point you did not though. i super hope you have changed your passwords since. and that you don't use the same password for everything.

you will have to forgive me, i treat everyone who has used IE in the last five years as if they have scurvy, super aids, and mega hepatitis.

and you can't blame me for that

LOL I hear ya, yes I did at one point and no I don't use the same passwords for any two things, which is also something I did at one point (memory like a fish). Looking in Hindsight, Using IE coupled with the same passwords for everything makes me chuckle. How naive I was.
