cocteau twins and my bloody valentine are really all you need

you can't keep repeat listening to things though, plus cocteau are a bit lame. heh. So you find other people's spin on things, they might not be the originators and instead mostly stick to the conventions lade down by others, but that wide expansive sound is still there, roaring away through the reverb, so it's all good.

i of course disagree cocteau twins is one of my favorite bands but i do get tired of listening to the same mbv over and over again, still imitators aren't as good

I think I'm gonna have enough music to search here to last me the rest of the year :music::yeah:

And holy hell, Angelic Process is heavy and at the same time, absolutely beautiful... the heavy sludgy parts remind me of a faster Electric Wizard... or maybe I just haven't listened to them in years and my brain is a bit foggy.

Any shoegaze or other musics that might sound like Slowdive's early stuff?

I mean tracks like Avalyn I-II, Albatross, Losing Today.. slow, heavy, brooding, reverby haze. I like all of their albums but my most listened cd is the second disc of the Just For A Day re-issue which has their ep stuffs. Pygmalion is also fucking ace but had couple of tracks I didn't care for. Haven't listened to Souvlaki for ages but popped in Just For A Day the other day and, well, had to stop about halfway and switch to the 2nd disc cause it's just so much better.

Their "ambient" stuff sucks balls btw.

I'll just leave these here:

Avalyn II - longer version of Avalyn I without vocals, first Slowdive track I ever heard, it was in the opening credits of Gregg Araki's Nowhere - I'll never get sick of this.

Albatross

Losing Today

also, best 1min 30sec I ever spent: Cello

Thank you for your attention, bai.

this song has some real clear slowdive guitar work in it. unfortunately not a big fan of the rest of their stuff:

and then this blonde redhead song (and the album it's on) was produced by alan moulder, who engineered parts of loveless, and it shows:

the voices were a pretty good shoegaze band. some of their songs are really similar to spacemen 3 stuff, like, a little too similar, but i enjoy their second album:

oh and if you're going to listen to mbv just go straight for the two eps that accompany loveless. tremolo and glider are, taken together, much better than that album. and if you can, find "sugar" from the only shallow promo cd. that's one of their best tracks.

this cover of a wire song is actually better than the original:

dude above me has the right idea

At the moment I'm going through a big Codeine and Low phase:

Yeah man. White Birch & those first 4 or 5 Low albums are fine. Not really shoegaze though, I guess we called that stuff slowcore.

What about early American Analog Set?

As far as stuff that sounds like Slowdive bands have been trying to emulate them ever since they came out. There's loads of stuff, but rarely is it as good as Slowdive. Y'know they had Eno working with them on Souvlaki...

You're probably best off with Chapterhouse & The Telescopes who had some Slowdivey stuff though :

here's some other stuff, not very slowdivey :

Écailles de Lune is just beautiful, one of the best albums of 2010

Good recommendation, would of made it myself if you hadn't.

I thought this was kind of in the same vein as Alcest...just a lot more anguished sounding...

I find Alcest to be a lot more melodic than The Angelic Process, which is just overwhelming with layers of reverb and distortion... but not in a bad way at all

Yes, I agree. Angelic Process isn't as dreamy, a bit harder to dive into compared to rest of this thread.

Has Jesu been mentioned in this thread yet?

It's unfortunate that Flying Saucer Attack hasn't been mentioned yet. Can't go wrong with any of their albums, though their self-titled and Further are the most praised.

don't get me started... was trying not to go there.

here is a newish band, Ceremony, that reminds me a bit of FSA, New Order (obviously) & JAMC

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpuovDUmXpE

Kevin Shields brother was in Rollerskate Skinny for a while. They used a lot of samplers & were pretty advanced for their time. Not really shoegaze though. No one ever talks about these guys anymore.

but man, really get into the early Lush - gala, spooky, & split. i can't believe a band like Pearl Harbor gets the attention they get when they are clearly light years behind lush.
