Aphex should release a live record

Isnt it about time a live recording should be released officially, there is nothing like an atmosphere at an Aphex Twin gig, RockNess being a great example of a charged atmosphere and amazing sounds. Plus there is the whole remixing angle of some of his classics. Others would balk it this idea as he is essentially a studio artist, but nothing beats a live intensity.

fuck just a live CD,

I'd really like a LIVE DVD that's filmed professionally, with a few decent backstage interviews from the man himself that do not involve STUPID questions about his hair for example...*all in jest of course because we know he bullshits interviews...

I want to ask him about the guys on stage that pull the faces all the time for example....

or the woman in the Afx gimp suit at BLOC for example.

Agreed. But then a part of the myth will be disolved. And myths are good as it generates interest and cash.

Not so long ago a super rich yank was trawling the depths of Loch Ness for Nessie, with a state of the art boat. How bonkers is that? I'd like to know how this bloke made all his millions because it obviously wasn't down to an IQ.

Richard d James. The Man the Myth.

Actually, a live DVD with the visuals and everything would be amazing.

Of course if he did an interview for it, it would be nothing but lies. But come on, who wouldn't pay money to watch him lie his head off for twenty minutes? His lies are endlessly entertaining Mr D.James lying compulsively for 20 minutes would be about 100x more interesting and funny than your average electronic artist telling the truth for twice that long.

If it was something Richard put out, then I highly doubt he would take the piss in any sort of interview included on the performance. When it's his work, he takes a high level of pride in it.

That being said, I doubt there would be an interview portion of any DVD as that's not really his style. He'd more likely have others talking about his music and how it affected them/their music.

It really does indicate that we've reached a new level of boredom with waiting for a new Aphex record that we're cavilling over what hypothetical interviews would be included in an imaginary DVD, but...

I actually can't imagine anything more boring than watching other people talk about his music. It's one thing to watch someone you really admire talking about how they view their own work or, better, talking about their own creative process. (If they are able to articulate themselves well, otherwise, it can just be excruciating.) But watching other people talking about his work would be kind of on the same level as reading the kind of fan fiction people write on this board about what they think his songs "mean" or how they think his processes "work." Otherwise it all looks a bit "look at my famous mates" which is really tedious.

I would, personally, find it more entertaining to watch him lie for 20 minutes because I happen to find his (often underplayed) sense of humour is one of the more underrated things about him. I find him often very, very funny, whether intentionally or not. I'd like to see that aspect of him explored more, rather than getting some pompous talking heads doing a South Bank Show about Thee Aphex Twin.

(That said, was there ever a South Bank Show about him? I don't remember there being one, but there have been some pretty weird ones so I don't think he'd be out of place.)

So, say for instance Autechre's opinions on Aphex's music, etc. along with other notable artists and people in the industry would just bore you to tears?

Well, TBH, Autechre doing pretty much anything would bore me to tears!

::awaits banning::

I just don't have this blanket interest in "people in the industry" I guess. And with "notable artists" it always comes down to whose idea of notable. Like, do I want to listen to "Warp records rounds up the fashionable avante guarde electronica elite of today" wax on about how they wanked to ICBYD, aged 13? No, not really.

Would I be interested in, say, Grant or Vibert, talking about teenage japes Mr D.James got up to and what terrible 80s techno records he DJ'd in the youth clubs of St. Ives and Porthperran? OK, maybe. Because that actually speaks to the experiences (musical and otherwise) that formed Mr D.James into the person he became, and the music he consumed would inform his own sensibilities.

I guess you have to view an artist in context. But the context I'm more interested in, is what shaped them, rather than what they shaped in other people.

Uhh, Masonic, there was plenty of good techno from the 80s.

I'm certainly aware of that. I was there, after all. ;-)

But I was curious, specifically, when he said in an interview, talking about how hard it was for him to obtain records in the 80s, and how he had, at the time, loved records, but on going back and listening to them as an adult, realised they weren't as great as he thought they were, and he'd talked them up in his own imagination, because he had so little access to anything else.

So I was just kind of curious as to what those records were. Knowing he wouldn't admit it, but that maybe people who had seen him DJ at the time might.

i really like hearing what one artist thinks of another

SO THEN I KNOW WHAT TO THINK OF THEM TOO

but really, i rather enjoy hearing what an artist has to say about creative process and musical philosophy. of course, if they can make it understandable

ok, i keep reading more and more of your post and it seems very negative....
