The Oversteps Set

So how do people feel about the live set a few months down the line??

Got mixed feelings about it, there's a few moments in it that i absolutely love, but ultimately it's pretty weak in comparison to the previous two. There's too many points in it where things seem to be really rockin but then peter out and stay on a tangent for 4-5 mins. Take 5:05 in to the Domino set for instance. Awesome build-up to it, but then wanders for almost 3 minutes. There's barely anything from 10:00 to 20:00 mins that i'd pushed to listen to twice. The pounding 4/4 track @ 32:13 is sick, but apart from that there's little in the set that's particularly memorable. The main thing that gets me is that throughout out most of it we can hear some pretty tasty melodic sounds hidden in the background.....the problem being, well, they're hidden. There's a lot of cool percussive sounds in there that i'd like to hear more of on their studio releases, but more often than not, it sounds like there's about four different patterns playing at once, with two of them changing almost every single bar (bit of an exaggeration maybe, but either way it's hectic to fuck), so at many points it's impossible to soak up what's going on.

Conclusion: For a pair of guys that can come up with the some of the most cutting edge electronic music out there, they really sell themselves short with a set like that. And just to add a further two cents, i absolutely love their approach to percussion, but to me it's all about their melodies....undoubtedly. Hence the reason i've only listened to "Etchogon-7" twice the whole way through, and am still listening to "Nil" almost 9 years after first having heard it.

It's a good set, the 32min bit is amazing, but you're right it pales in comparison to the previous two.

The sound must have been fucked when I saw them at Bloc because it sounded like shit, whereas the Domino recording sounds far better.

Some excellent moments, but for me it was not as enjoyable as their Quaristice set

the bloc set did sound a lot darker / mindless beats compared to the london gig, where there was a whole world of nice extra sounds in there. Storming night that I enjoyed very much. Bloc in general was a great weekend though where autechre were not even a top 5 highlight of mine!

However I really enjoyed both gigs, primarily because it was the first full sets by the 'chre that ive ever seen (saw bits of a previous glade gig but was too smashed to get into it).

The domino recording does sound very good though and its a CD burner that lives in my car.

I guess I dont have the live connection with previous tour recordings, but maybe I should download a few more and try and get into them. The glasgow art school set is pretty sick.

I'm still waiting to see my first set by the 'chre, I really hope they bring their shit stateside this time around. There was a period where I was really into that Domino recording, it hit a certain itch and was just fucking awesome. But in general, I think the Untilted and Quaristice tours are more developed and awesome.

Did you hear this set live?

It was extremely enjoyable on the night, and I daresay that's the point. It's not like they've issued any of their live sets as official releases (much to our chagrin)

Yep. Caught them here in Dublin. Dunno, just found it got a bit boring to be honest. Granted I was on the whiskey so was maybe a bit riled up......first 10 mins i was loving it but then it just kinda fizzled out.

Oh. The first one sounds like live sets from the 90s.

Was that 2006 or 2008? The sound was kind of crappy where I was standing in 2006, but the 2008 set was incredible IMO. Naturally I'm fucking pissed off about what happened to Glade this year.

i was absolutely blown away seeing them at melbourne.

some of it goes nowhere, but halfway in the set onwards is just, quite honestly, too good for words.

after seeing them live I realised that just listening to their albums is only getting half the experience. their live shit blew my mind more than anything else I've heard by them, the dynamic range was incredible.

thats why they are quite rightly so very protective of the soundboard recordings.

thats why they are quite wrongly so very protective of the soundboard recordings. because most of the room recordings that come out as bootlegs sound significantly worse

quaristice tour was their best live show, imo. absolute pity there are no really good boots (sound quality wise) from this tour.

untilted tour comes in second place.

oversteps tour: some moments of absolute brilliance amongst quite a bit of tedium. personally could do without that super long 'bass drum falling down the stairs' part. got the point after a couple minutes, beyond that it's just plain annoying.

i do like the fact that the recent stuff seems a lot more improvised. comparing the boots of different nights you hear a lot more variety from show to show than usual.

Ermmm both actually

2006 I went in there with my mate, not knowing what to expect. The pitch black tent and smoke machines really freaked my mate out (mushrooms) and he flipped :emotawesomepm9:

In 2008 I was in a very happy mood and experiencing autechre would not have felt right at all. Think we caught System 7 instead who were fucking ace and smashed it to bits with live power trance. Such is the all consuming powerful nature of the mighty Glade Festival.

I sorta get where you're coming from but at the same time I'm totally lost. Are you saying you'd only go see Autechre when in a bout of deep depression?

Posted

No, im saying that different music makes more sense depending on what sort of mood im in, especially when at a festival.

If you've been dancing to some bouncy breakbeats or some psy-trance, then dancing to autechre would kinda kill the mood of the day. Festivals (especially Glade) are a bit of an endurance test especially when it gets to Sunday! Although saying that, I would probably enjoy autechre more now than I would have in 2008, given how much I've been listening to their music lately.

i listened to the domino set for the last hour of my 4 hour drive through the irish contryside yesterday and i have come through the "what the.....?" you initially get with live auechre sets to the "I finally get it" euphoria of pure love .... normally about 10 listens for me.....

Oversteps tour = gorgeousness the way only autechre know how... Fantastic soundscapes and alien beats. Like standing too close to a beauitifull vista and moving back until you go...HOLY SHIT!!!
