LFO - Advance

I searched for reviews on LFO's Advance to find additional info and allmusic shows this review:

Nearly legendary as the album-that-almost-never-happened, Advance was a full five years in the making, with hardly a peep of new material in between. The result isn't as essential as their debut, but growth and maturity are evident, particularly in the focus and depth of composition. The material flows nicely, with the heavier, more body-oriented material broken up by contemplative, atmospheric ambient interludes.

someone here knows the meaning or story behind the album-that-almost-never-happened?

i think it just means that it took so long to release that it seemed like it'd never happen.

i instantly considered that, like the reviewer is saying the album got a legendary status because it took 5 years to make it... but i thought it could have a story behind it. but in that case the internet would have the answer for sure.

I don't imagine he's any need to money-wise, but I'd love to see Mark Bell come back with another LFO release. For me it could only ever be released on Warp though, I've got nostalgic memories of LFO.

And Sheath just shades Advance for me.

I would approve such released definitely.

I prefer frequencies over Advance and Sheath. it's a wonderful record.

yeah same here. i really really like 'Sheath'.

i prefer Frequencies to Advance. though there are some superb tracks on Advance, fo' sure.

and i agree that album is where he got his sound down.

would love to see/hear a new album, or anything new, from LFO.

also his live shows are fucking amazing! - so a mini tour of the UK, Ireland and Europe, please. :D

also, i love that short tune that was on the 2003 Warp sampler. gives me goosebumps.

i could listen to it on repeat for hours. it's awesome. :)

I think he's too busy to actually make music anymore.

He still finds time to tour with Björk whenever she goes out... Which I can quite understand!

..but the rest of the time he's just sippin champagne and eating sushi with the mile high club and all the elite, lol

Oh. LFO was my first biiiiiig love on WARP. Oh how I was praying for a new album after Frequencies, I wrote pretty often to WARP ... but LFO was close to dead for me after "We are back" (which was still good). And we already had to wait loooooong for "We are back".

With "What is house" LFO was already on the "out of ideas" list. I liked it, but not that much love as with tracks like "Mentok 1" or the LFO/N.O.W. remix of "[forgot title - there's something going wrong inside my head] EDIT AFTERMATH/LFO RMX

What an era of suffering while waiting for new LFO. What a disappointment in the end. When Advance was released, LFO was already dead.

but then Sheath came out, and the 'Freak' ep (which is pure fucking awesomeness!!) which made up for everything, imo. :)

I remember the disappointment when 'We Are Back' came out, and 'Frequencies' for that matter. I felt underwhelmed by it at the time, but I think that's because 'LFO' was soooo fucking good. And the remix, with that ridiculously deep sub-bass. Awesome. Grown to love the whole shebang as time's gone on though.

EDIT: Never seen much LFO WATMM love in my time here (probably missed it, being a n00b). There should be a sub-forum for LFO just out of respect.

i'd say mark bell could comfortably retire off his bjork $$$ alone.

you're hardly a n00b, Caretstik! with 3547 posts! and having registered 4 years ago!

suprised you were dissapointed with Frequencies at the time.

but can understand that underwhelmed feeling when an album you've really been looking forward to really dissapoints.

i still think Frequencies is a top album, though.

if LFO had put out more stuff of equal and better quality over the years there's no doubt he'd be up there with Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Plaid,

and have a sub forum here. :)

but he just aint done enough, imo.

sirch, I just don't think I was ready for 'Frequencies' at the time. I was wanting an album full of 'LFO' variations, which to their credit it wasn't. But it's definitely grown in stature for me as I've gotten older and broadened my horizons a bit from when I was in my early 20s. A great album, I just couldn't see it at then, although at the same time it did open my eyes to new things as well.

i didn't mean that to sound quite so derogatory. the man sure has talent and is worthy of the $$$ !

a case of 'right place, right time' + wicked skills and talent. :)
