Math Rock

Recommended Posts

Don Caballero (up to American Don), Slint, Piglet, (early) Tera Melos, Giraffes? Giraffes!, Faraquet, The Redneck Manifesto, Adebisi Shank, LITE, Battles, Oxes, Drive Like Jehu, etc.

Anyone else dig this genre here? I'm always looking for recommendations for more of this stuff. I have to say I prefer instrumental math rock, but Slint and Drive Like Jehu both rock.

I don't know if it's very math-y, but it's fucking insane imo

most of those bands are pretty sucky though, so I might have to retract that "very much so" statement.

I like early 'don cab', 'battles', early 'tera melos' (new album is fail), some 'hella'/'zach hill' and some 'by the end of tonight'

how is slint 'math rock'?

also, assuming you like faraquet, the early medications stuff should be familiar to you. it's basically just more faraquet, with a slightly more saccarine tone to it.

I have a passing interest in math rock, you mentioned pretty much all of the bands I like.

As for Adebisi Shank, their first EP is all I really like. They have some great tunes on their two LPs but they're not very solid albums.

I actually liked Medications album from this year, it was my cheesy happy summer album.

edit: how could i forget loose lips sink ships?

seen them live, was a good show.

Goodness yes I am a fan of this genre. Of course there are some not-so-good or copycat bands, as with any genre. Of the ones mentioned I really like Faraquet, Tera Melos (have yet to hear the new one), LITE, Battles (prefer the instrumental, looking forward to new stuff), Oxes (I've only heard one album though), Medications (didn't know there was a new one, thanks for the tip!) and Rumah Sakit. By the End of Tonight is alright, and Don Cab is of course to be respected but they haven't hit the spot for me (same with Hella I guess, just found it too messy). Haven't heard the others. As mentioned, I don't really think Slint are math rock, nor do I think Drive Like Jehu are math rock. But I like them both also.

Others to consider:

Sleeping People (same bassist as Rumah Sakit, and a chick on guitar :emotawesomepm9: )

Other Men (basically Heavy Vegetable reformed. Sounds like a math version of Pinback, I love it)

The Ladies (Rob Crow from Pinback & Other Men and Zach Hill from Hella)

Minus the Bear (first album is great, after that they weren't really math)

Maps & Atlases

Polvo

Rodan

June of 44

Lynx (guitarist Dave Konopka is now in Battles...I like Lynx more)

Tic Code

Ahleuchatistas

Three Trapped Tigers

Foals (first album)

Polvo

nomeansno

Battles

65daysofstatic (fuck I remember when they first started out on tefosav - hello feedle!)

if battles is considered math rock, then surely helmet must be as well?

So whys it called math rock then ?

Characterised by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), angular melodies, and dissonant chords [...]

“It [the term ‘math rock’] was invented by a friend of ours as a derogatory term for a band me and James [Lo – Chavez’s drummer] played in called Wider. But his whole joke is that he’d watch the song and not react at all, and then take out his calculator to figure out how good the song was. So he’d call it math rock, and it was a total diss, as it should be.”

i don't know if its a good read, haven't read all of it, but I think it covers it

it such a stupid name for a genre, just like IDM

in fact math rock could be the rock equivalent of IDM - IRM (intelligent rock music)

I love this album:

Do my eyes deceive me or has no one listed the best math rock band ever?

Volta do Mar!

They're a band I've had on my radar for years, but have still yet to listen to.

Eh Tool is not math rock. They may have some of the same characteristics as math rock, but many genres share characteristics.

Based on what, having shared a drummer?

does dep's calculating infinity count? thats an amazing record

Being much heavier and featuring screamed vocals, they are considered mathcore/metalcore.

Truth.

I gotta check out some of these other bands. As if I didn't mine other threads for a dozen recos last night already. :whistling:
