jim o'rourke

this man seems to be behind a lot of great records, either as an engineer, band member or producer. he has a pretty solid solo output that varies between the avant-garde, pop and fahey-esque americana. he was in sonic youth. he looks like a hobbit and lives in japan. and he made, track for track, the best ep i've ever heard.

jim o'rourke is awesome.

glad i read this thread.

thanks for your wonderful post, it really contributed something

i guess no one else likes jim o'rourke.

capsaicin: are you a fan of any of his electronic stuff? i'm wondering if it's worth getting into. his pop albums are all excellent and bad timing is a really nice fahey homage, and then his work in gastr del sol is fantastic. but i wonder, is he really any good at the more avant garde stuff? although...fenn o'berg is pretty damn good. maybe collaborations are his strong suit.

i like O'rourke, have heard many albums of his, but like, what's the point? is there something in particular you'd like to discuss? his stuff is pretty varied.

First off,

up-2moore.jpg

he's adorable.

Secondly, I think he really understands what works about pop music, which I really appreciate a lot. His recent interpretation of Burt Bacharach tunes is generally excellent. Bad Timing is amazing.

His more experimental work is pretty good—definitely all over the place though, from a lot of organ-heavy drone (two organs and what seems like a fair amount of his experimental work) to musique concrete (rules of reduction) and everything in between. the drone even works its way into his pop work as a john cale-ish undertone, which is really interesting, production-wise.

And his collabs are definitely fucking sick. Aside from Fenn'o'berg, he had a great collaboration with Henry Kaiser, Tomorrow Knows Where You Live. Really eccentric improvised guitar duets. Fucking crazy dude, o'rourke

Does anyone know the track he did for the in mem oriam of gilles deleuze compilation,“as in“ i think.

I quite liked that one, which of his other stuff is similar to this?

I think I remember that being a drone track, right?

Check out Disengage

It is drones made out of orchestral type instrumentation.

Only heard his stuff with Gastr del Sol, which I love.. but one day I need to dive headfirst into his discography. (preferably a career-spanning torrent, because his solo music is always so goddamn expensive)
