Splitrmx12 - 33 1/3 or 45 rpm?

I have the Splirmx12 in two speeds.

At 33 1/3 rpm, the two tracks sound slow and dull to me.

While at 45 rpm, they sound much better and more coherent.

 

My personal opinion is the tracks should be played at 45 rpm but what do you others think?

if you check the history page for that listing, there is a discussion where it is clearly 33⅓ rpm

You're probably right but I was just trying to find an excuse for, imho, the worst release by Autechre.

God is the Splitrmx12 boring. Like watching paint dry. I doubt I'll ever listen to it again at 33 1/3 rpm.

 

Now I'll have to try Flutter at 33 1/3 rpm.

Out of all remixes they've done, beside the Tortoise one the Neu! is my favourite Ae track. This track is perfection. It's probably the center of the universe.

First time I heard it I really wasn't impressed. Then I listened to it on a train journey and everything clicked. You can't dislike the Neu! remix, it's everything it should be - hypnotic qualities of Neu! meet hip-hop Autechre stylings

I've posted my thoughts previously on remixes, and what constitutes a good one. Essentially, (were you a remixer) you need to keep some recognisable elements of the original track, and put your own imprint on it. Simple. It's hard, then, to see the value of remixing such obscure material. Few people are going to know what remains of Weissensee and Im Glück, two tracks from Neu!'s 1972 debut album. I can't even find anything about Bic? I suspect they may have been invented for this release.

 

The music, though, has similarities to the mail-order only single We R Are Why, released three years previously. The beats are steady and less inventive than the movable feast of rhythm that constituted Chiastic Slide and LP5, there are even similarities to Happy Cycling by Boards of Canada on the B-side.

 

The bass drum and bassline are interestingly linked. The bass synth has a boing-y quality, that when matched exactly with the bass kick gives an impression that the music is constantly speeding up. The bubbly broken synth line that wafts over the top might be where the 'Drowning' element of the title comes from. There is also what could be scratching, but sounds more like another record is being spun backwards, quietly. Eleven minutes is well pushing it though, far too long.

I was completely braindead when I wrote this. I meant 45. 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45 45! Because I actually only listen to it from a computer, not from my Vinyls any more, I forgot that there's only a slower alternative, not a faster... Now I remember 33 was so terribly slow...

Turn it down a little, dude, I wrote that with a touch of sarcasm. There's plenty of Ae I don't like (most of Tri Rep springs to mind), and I've been listening to them for a long time. Weissensee Against Im Glück happens to be one I like a lot. I've spent quality time with literally everything they've released, and most of their available live recordings and DJ sets, so you'll have to accept it's an informed opinion.

Mind you, I fell for one of the Oversteps fakes so that opinion is provably fallible.

There are four Autechrre songs that are knwon to be able to be played at different speeds.

 

Flutter from the anti ep was designed to be played at both 33 and 45 rpm even though the cd is the 45 mix.

 

Of course the Splitrmx12.

 

And the Unique 3 - The Theme (Autechre Remix).

The 45 mix sometimes goes by the Autechre Fast Remix and the 33 mix the Autechre Slow Remix.

FYI - if you want to convert between between formats here's how.

From 33 1/3 rpm to 45 rpm (ie speed up) = 27/20 = 135% speed up the song.

Vice Versa - 20/27 = 74.074% to slow down the song.

You can do it yourself with the proper program.

Yeah, SoX is the program for me. A simple play 06* speed .74074 will do the trick. Rarely do I speed things up, so I may prefer this Splitrmx12 at 33⅓rpm.
