For me:

  • Renoise's pattern editor
  • reViSiT's zooming/tick-level editing
  • FL Studio's piano roll
  • FL Studio/Logic's level of visual feedback for effects
  • Live/Logic's beat warping
  • Live's MIDI effects
  • FL Studio's automation curves

I'll add more if I think of anything else. What about you guys?

So is reaper good? I'm looking at it now, and the fair pricing thing is really cool. I'll grab the demo. To be honest though I'm fucking sick of switching software all the time. I've used logic for a long time now, but still can't figure some shit out. It's a horribly non-intuitive program. Some things are great, but it is totally not easy to use. And that sucks. I'm always looking for something better, but till now haven't found it.

REAPER rocks pretty damn hard. I'm with BFC there. I'm about to start using it with reViSiT, which (if my calculations are correct) should be 5th level baller.

have fun getting it working right, usually it will inexplicably fail randomly and youll spend all day trying to figure it out only to have the problem disappear randomly as well.

You've got some crazy problems then, because I've been using REAPER for years and it has never crashed. The only technical problem I've ever had was getting a few underruns when using the 64-bit version, which happens any time I use any 64-bit audio program, so it's not REAPER's fault anyway.

well once i got reaper working it stayed that way and was fine. but how I got it working, was seemingly by mere chance - i would restart windows and it would still be there, then i would restart windows again and it would be gone. also i had this synchronization issue with rewire where reaper would always be like .17 seconds ahead of the rewire master so the only thing I could do was record the output of reaper separately to a friggin wav file then just layer it into my main daw as an audio track

oh, and the sync issued came and went, it wasn't always the same either so I couldnt just apply some template solution. sometimes it would be all the way off by .ike 1.25 seconds and I would have to figure it out again each time.

That's weird, man. Sorry you've had so many issues with it.

Buzz hasn't failed me yet as far as a DAW goes, but the hardware interface I'm working on for it would allow me to control a whole bunch of servo motors via midi, for hitting drums & tin cans & things (in theory combining the richness of real world percussion with the tight timing of drum machines).

That sounds sick as hell, sir.

you see that hard drive drum machine clip on youtube?

Don't think I have. I did see a few videos of guys who used midi-to-relay circuits, which is the route I'm going. I think there might also be some possibilities with using a CV Out as a trigger.

my fave app )DAW?) is acid pro. very easy to use and does everything i want it too.

Really? I ain't hatin', but I always thought Acid was really lacking in most features. Maybe I wasn't doing it right (or maybe I just haven't used it in a while).
